I recently replaced the shocks all they way around and the upper passenger's control arm on our 2001 LC (the front steering was very vague). I took the vehicle in to a local shop for an alignment, but upon inspection they identified the inner tie-rod as needing replacement. Rather than mess around with ordering and replacing this myself, I opted to get the shop to do it for me (a bit of a time crunch before vacation), but they've had a terrible time getting the part ordered in. Is the inner available separately?

He even tried ordering one from the local Toyota dealer, but the dealer wouldn't sell him just an inner tie-rod (or even a full tie rod), only the rack with the inners attached. Is he missing something (like the inner isn't available aftermarket) or just having bad luck getting parts in time to do this?

Thanks,

John

I just had my inner and outer tie rod replaced. ~$400 out the door with alignment.
I let the dealer install since I need alignment also

Thanks, I thought so, it looks like you can even find them at Rockauto.com. Funny thing is he couldn't find one locally the day I had it in for the alignment so he ordered one, took it in yesterday and he found the box had an outer tie-rod (but only after disassembly did he check), re-ordered (three boxes, just in case), and all htree had outer tie-rods instead and not even LC outer tie-rods.

Quoted price was similar - $425 with alignment, but that's with a Moog part and done at a tire shop instead (but think Canadian prices in an overpriced oil town...).

I'll just have to wait and see what he comes up with for the part next time, its coming out of the east instead of Edmonton.

curious if anyone else has had this exeperience of the inner not being for sale? I am facing inner and outer repalcement after just 100k miles (wtf) and wonder if full rack is in order? I know the rack is a PITA compared to the TREs so want to avoid, but am bothered they wore out so soon - just socal highway driving AFAIK.

Is somethign else contributing to early wear? Shoudl I replace the whole rack, and if so why?

If the dealer wont sell me the inners would you go moog? (cause I am really not in the mood to do a full rack unless abs nec.)

I just went through this on my 2000 - I've ordered a complete parts list to redo the whole thing. This list might help:

Parts List for Steering Rack Replacement (1998-2003)

The inner TRE parts are available from toyota - online Toyota dealers price them at about $80 ea

thanks @RobRed - will check my local dealer tomorrow and then the web.

Any opinions on if the wet inner boot is a symptom of a filing rack that I should replace as well? (plz plz plz no...)

Rob- have you looked into a rebuilt OEM rack from CVJ?
