Hi,

Last week I've done some maintenance to my 1HDT, timing belt, water pump and fuel filter. And noticed the Tik tik coming from the ACSD, as some described in other forum it means it's failing, so I'm thinking about removing it.

But something also started happening that I don't know the cause... My car use to start just needing a small turn of the key/ crank and now, after the maintenance, it needs a bit more time cranking and sometimes a second crank. And something that is also happening is if I do a pull ( floor a second gear) and then take it out of gear the RPMs instead of dropping to the normal idle the RPMs fall to that, then to around 400RPMs ( for several seconds) and then back to normal.
After the engine starts and idles for a bit if I turn it off and back on again it starts as it used to. Just "half crank" and it's on.

Air going in the fuel circuit? ACSD? Any thoughts?

Cheers

i'd start by looking at the things you changed, or fiddled with recently.
firstly. I'd be checking for air in the fuel system.
you just changed fuel filter, so it could be leaking in around on of the seals on the filter. or also possibly the rubber in the hand primer at the fuel filter assembly has split and is leaking air into the fuel system. did you you use the hand primer to re=prime the fuel pump after changing the filter? it may have been just holding together, then failed through your recent use.

Hi,

By looking at the filter assembly everything looks OK but the bottom water sensor that has a little residue, doesn't even leaks or have signs of drop.

And Yes I've used the manual primer. If it gone bad it should show a leak or not?

Thanks.

You can have air getting sucked in through a leak without any sign of fuel leaking out.

try putting some clear tube from the fuel filter to the injection pump in stead of the black rubber. you should see bubbles if air is a problem

Great Simple idea! Thanks.

X2 on the clear hose.
In the mean time before you start her after sitting overnight, open the hood and try the primer.
If the primer is firm or firms up in 2 pumps then your system should be OK.
On the other hand if you have to prime multiple times before the primer is firm the you are sucking air which is very difficult to find.
I would also test the primer after you have run the engine and see if the primer is still firm, which judging from your comments will be the case.
The low idle and hard starting might also indicate that you require a bit of extra fuel, there is an adjustable fuel screw on the IP.
Should have a lock nut and may be wired.
More fuel will increase rpm's and if over fuelled more smoke....adjust slowly and keep notes.
I used to add fuel for winter starting and lower fuel for summer driving.
Best way to adjust fuel is to disconnect throttle linkage, adjust fuel to Rpm, then connect linkage or manually adjust idle set screw and test drive.

Lastly if the ACSD fails it will grind itself into fine shavings plugging up the internal pump filter thus starving the engine for fuel.

Thanks for the comments and tips.

While driving and pulling the engine seems good, no hesitations or other different behaviour that would point to lack of fuel or maybe fuel delivery variations.... I would say.

Hi Again,

So I followed @Squash tips and... After running the primer is not fully hard a couple of primes and it get's harder, after a all night it needs 6 or more primes to get really hard. Diesel moisture and some residue continues to show on the water sensor so next Tuesday I'll be fitting a new one that was ordered today at the local Toyota dealer.

Beside that the rig is running great! Even seems stronger!

Cheers

And so it seems that the little residue in the water sensor was enough to cause this issue. New sensor and it's solved.

cheers
