Is this Ben's old one? I know of it if so.
Where are you? in Alabama?
I've found me a 1FZE but dang... i don't like it.

Be on the look out please... willing to travel for it.

I need my next rig, Ideally an 80 series sporting one of those hi powered 3FE engines... so a 91 or 92.
It's got to be clean cause I'm keeping it more expedition style this time.... no Cattywampus here.
I'll eventually get a hunderd series and tow a mini for beatings but for now, I need a mall crawler...

Thanks bhmmapping! I'm now looking for another 3FE 80 series... AGAIN!
'cept this time, it ain't got to be cherry, this is turning into my wheeling rig... gonna do a matt-swap to the tranny and put a crawler in it... probably won't even lift it... just put some longer shocks on it, 37's and cut the piss outta the fenders...
So basically a 91-92 as cheap as i can find one...

I've been thinking about this more than I should, I gotta put some miles on mine before I take on a new project. but if I were to start over I would

a)find one with a bad drivetrain and do a 2" bodylift:

b) buy this, pull the drivetrain and sell the rest for parts :

c) get the head from cattywampus and bolt it on that 2f

d)get a toybox and a t-case rebuild kit.

e)see if the stock crossmember and driveshafts would really bolt up with the toybox.

there's going to need to be modifications to cross-members and driveshafts no doubt. But that's all easy crap that i can handle... the rough stuff that is over my head is the fitment between engine/tranny/xfer/toybox... however that all seems to be resolved (correct me if i'm wrong here)

clank, can't be no stinkin' ratty ass 1FZE... i got one of them that ain't worth crap... needs to be 3FE... the later A42's has a 3F bellhousing on it... bolts right to the 3FE.

With a two inch bodylift I think it would bolt right in, not cutting or hammer work necessary. Not that the cutting or hammering was difficult or extensive, but you would have to have a body lift anyway for the 2fe.

Without the toybox, I had to use the h42 mounts, which are on the front of the tranny. That is why the xmember is so far forward. The low part of the split case ends up right between the factory xmember mounts. With a toybox, you would use the mini truck xmember mounts on the toxbox itself. since it mounts on the back of the tranny where the split case is now, there is a very good chance that it would be lined up with the 80 mounts, it will definitely be close enough to use them.

If you really get serious about it we can find out where the xmember mounts are on the toxbox and where they would end up in the 80.

the triple sticks would be the hardest fab work, when I do this again I will fab cable shifters with push-pull cables from mcmaster and mount the shifters to the body. that way you don't have any vibrations from the shifters, you don't have to grind and turn the h-l selector and you don't have to snake the rods up and over the transmission. you also wouldn't have the toybox shifter all by itself in the middle of the console.

I think he was saying you ditch the whole drivetrain for the 93, and swap in catty's. you could really do that with your truck now though. just swap in the instrument cluster to use the speedometer. It would be easier to start with an installed and running 3fe and bolt the good stuff to the back of that. 2fe would add a lot of complications the more I think about it.

Just called about a salvaged 91 that was picked up and never claimed... they have no idea why it ain't cranking... contemplating my next step with that one...
I'm serious.

excellent. in Auburn? I would love to see you drop the engine from cattywampus in one, you could call it "a little bit cattywampus."

these are the cables from mcmaster for future reference. They are more expensive than I remember, but I think they would work great:

oh. well, swapping enignes would not be too hard. The hardest and scariest thing to me would be the wiring harness... no one has ever given me insight on whether they would mate up. i doubt it.
PLUS the exhaust would need re-routing and hangers re-hung... all said and done, a cheap 91-92 would be well, cheaper.

not in Auburn... I'll keep it quiet for now, since i can't look at it for a week or so...

Catty is not out of the picture... let me find a non-locked front axle FOR THE RIGHT PRICE and it might be the revived...

almost all of the wiring harness would go to the 3fe head, correct? I think you are right though, with a body lift, I think you would pretty much just be turning wrenches.

some other benefits of the body lift and toybox I have considered:

with the extra clearance and leverage, you could probaby tuck the transfer up a little more for a flat belly pan. especially since you would be relocating the radiator anyway.

cut the rockers and weld in sliders - that alone is = 4" of extra clearance over a stock rig with bolt on sliders. I will probably do this, I always barely hit the sliders, I don't think I would hit them in the rockers 90% of the time.

now that's a definite on a "wheelin' rig"! shoot, that's 3 inches of clearance right there. When i don't have sliders I often notice how I rarely hit anything, but once sliders are on, then I hit everything! With sliders put where the rockers are, that's be the cats nuts right there.

Found one. thx everyone for thier help.
