I became inspired last night after my neighbor talked to a guy on a handheld ham radio and a cheap yagi antenna camping SE of globe like he was stand next door with zero static. Then talk with mobile unit at Ponderosa campground east of Payson with the same quality connection.

I understand ham is not for everyone and Im not trying to convert anyone. Just my install thread and some info for the curious to be a legal operator. You do need to take a test and get a license:rolleyes: I have $145 in a brand new 65watt Kenwood radio and antenna. For me the trade off is well worth it. No more listening to the moron in Alabama bleeding on every channel requiring you to turn your squelch up so high you cant hear the vehicle 2 trucks behind you. Talk 10 miles plus with a phone quality connection all the time anywhere. With local repeater programed into your radio enjoy the ability to contact others and access to emergency help just about anywhere.

I also modded my ham to receive and talk race frequency used by people, pits, aircraft, and teams that race off road be it SCORE Baja or Best in the desert.

I first installed the newer (black) Uniden CB but you cannot hear others without the mic plugged in. I then installed an old Uniden unit (actually better) not as pretty but will receive without the mic plugged in. Does everyone with the new style Uniden has the same experience?

Phil,
When I was researching my install the issue that kept coming up was heat. I went with the under the seat mount to avoid this problem. Let me know if you run into any issue, as I’d like to mount my Ham in the same location.

Ive decided to replace my in dash cb with a HAM unit. LOoking for distance and clarity. The prices were much less than I imagined so I ordered my stuff today. Next is to take the test and get the license.

Ill will continue to also run my mobile CB with the rubber duckie.

My father ran Ham since I was young and even had a mobile unit in his 1976 blazer that we could hit repeaters with a phone patch. That was pretty cool back in the day.

I dealt with Gary Judd the manager at Ham Radio outlet on 43rd and Peoria. They match the website pricing and they man was very helpful and spent time helping me with my purchase.

LIke someone else mentioned, it is at least good to have for emergency situations out in the boonies.

Do tell... What exactly did you purchase, model numbers etc.
