Hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I recently bought *what i believe to be* a FJ70 Land Cruiser with the 3F carb engine in it. I live in Bogota, Colombia and love four wheeling but like most everyone else, i wanted some sort of break from the gas guzzling problem. Since this is a really international site, i wanted to ask around and see what the proper procedure to adapt a diesel engine to my chasis would be... any imput, questions or coments are grately appreciated!

do they sell diesels there? if so then the cheapest and probably the best is to sell your rig and buy one that is already a diesel...
let's put it this way, you can buy a lot of gas for the cost of a diesel transplant
cheers

From the picture and your description that's an FJ73.

I have had that said to me a few times, but mine has a shorter wheelbase, and its japanese (if that maks a difference). I know the FJ73 because we still ahve them being built in Colombia, but mine is definitely shorter than the newer ones, here's a side pic so you can see how much trunk space mine has.

(sorry, not the best pic... but it was all i could find)

Ah, very intersting. AN FRP top 70. That is super rare, I think

Ive heard that also... but originaly i think it came with a rag top, which i am trying to put back on again. I actually think that the top is manufactured by a Colombian fiberglass company....

Welcome Albertom
They sure did a good job on the fit and shape almost as if they took a mould off Toyotas own design and shortened it:D:D:D:D

this thread is specific for the odd ball and rare rigs (parts).

Back to your original question about a diesel implant,I think a 12HT woulld be the ideal engine for a FJ70.
It should fit straight in and in a 70 it would really get up and go;)

roscoFJ73, thats a great tip, the specs on that engine look great but i how widely available is that engine and what car was it on originally? I'm not 100% sure we ever got those here in south america...

They have offered me the option of putting a 3.0 liter Turbo Diesel (apparently new or remanufactured) from some sort of truck (toyota as well) into my FJ70. It doenst sound too convincing considering they didnt give me the specs off of it or anything like that, but i saw a car that had done the transplant and it looked great. I would assume a transmision change would be in order with a transplant right?

Albertom you are correct they are not easy to get hold of and probably wernt sold in SAmerica. I know of only Australia and Japan that got them and maybe some European countries.
They are found in the landcruiser HJ61
However there are still low klm used 12HT leaking out of Japan and it would be worth looking for one .
Any other toyota diesel will require a gearbox swap and new engine to chassis mounts.
Someone on the 4WD Monthly forum dropped a 12HT into his 75 series ambulance and was very happy with it.
I havent been able to find the thread though

At a guess I would say the 3 ltr diesel they are talking about is the 1KZ or one of its derivatives.
Its available in the Dyna truck and Prado and probably a Coaster bus as well.
It would be a good swap if it has a turbo and not too much electronics.
And yeah it will be a transmission swap as well.

There is also the 13BT option as well

Here is a 12HT pic

Dear Alberton,

I live in Ecuador, where I drive a 1986 FJ70. I don't have any digital images in this machine, but will post one later. My Landcruiser has nearly 500,000 km (300,000 miles) and is going strong. I use it on my farm and for weekend trips to the mountains.

My wife has a '86 RJ70 (Landcruiser II, with a four cylinder 22R engine that I just fully rebuilt...). It is light, good ground clearance (no hanging leaf springs to catch rocks!) and tracks well in mud, but I'm addicted to the FJ70's power and pull. Likewise, I have an in-line, 6 cylinder 3F engine -- solid as granite but a gas guzzler. I get about 24km/gal (13 ml/gal). Fortunately, Ecuadorian fuel is about half the price as that in Colombia, but we all expect that to change in the near future...

As a result, I also am looking to convert to a diesel engine. I've been looking for a 14BT. A fellow in Bolivia has posted details on how he converted his 3F to a 14BT. If you'd like to download that document try: http://www.gscruiserparts.com/3F_to_14BT_in_FJ70.html

Someone told me that I should explore things in Colombia, so your message caught my eye... I'll let you know if I make any progress. I probably will end up importing something from Japan, as suggested by roscoFJ73.

Saludos!
