Good am all,

i am stationed here in frankfurt germany and thinking of bring back a landcruiser with me. I am looking at a 70 series first choice. i know i need to be 25 years and older to ship it back but i am not sure what else i need to do. I was told i dont need a registered importer as long as it over 25 years old. what other thing do i need to look out for?

thanks again

Does the military assist you when bringing home your personal vehicle?

Put the 70 Series in the bed of the Tacoma and throw some camo over it. :)
I have been in Frankfurt numerous times over the last 4 years and have never seen a
70 Series on the streets.

you can get taco in NA so switch them.
bring the 70, 2013 diesel troopy would be a hell of a score in NA
...
and worry about the taco here.

Importing into the USA if the vehicle is 25 years old requires two forms which can be found online. The vehicle needs to be fairly stock with no major modifications or engine swaps. Customs has been lax in the past but now are starting to crack down on vehicles coming into the USA that are not in factory condition. People trying to import Land Rover Defenders right now are having major headaches over this.

my neighbor here in frankfurt is importing a land-rover and was telling the same damn thing thanks for letting me the rover story is not a big ploy or something he was just told.

i am looking a BJ 73 mainly, found one less than 50 miles from my home now only to look closer and it was a 1989 feb model, i leave in DEC 2013 like 3 month too early lolololol

damn the luck

IF it is worth the money, then buy it. store it and arrange for someone to load it into a container for you.
of course, there is the time on the water, time unloading at the dock, time to get to customs to clear it so you will be darn close to eligibility.

I am thinking about that very thing. This one looks a bit rough but I like it.

Here is a link to one of the Gov't pages regarding Defenders:

Once they get board with Defenders they are likely to pick on other makes.

Reading this article reveals that there are people importing Defenders and swapping the VIN to make them seem old enough to import. I hope nobody on this forum is doing that. Sounds like a bad idea. The CBP guys are just doing their jobs.

I would like to hear more about people having trouble importing 25yr old vehicles to the US with mod's.

some things to consider
parts, parts are bit difficult to find in NA. the nicer the vehicle to begin with the more enjoyment you will have before having to wait for parts. we have created a good network of part suppliers but seldom will you have the part the next day or even the next week.
body, since the 70 series was never sold in the states finding body parts can be a bit of a challenge. the 73/74 series is rarer yet. i would suggest you shop trying to find the BEST you can afford not the cheapest you can find.

Very true very true. So far I have only found one 73 series. A million LJ models but only one BJ series. I have time so I will exactly that.

Here is a pic of the vin tag.

Thanks for the simple advice. I changed my search max price by 3 000 euro and found a super clean 73 with a 3 b. but it looks like much much more cruiser for the price.

Thanks.

Now thats funny comming from a guy with (2) out of country 70 series that were born in 1988

1988 bj73 w/ garrett turbo
1988 bj74 w/emu lift & safari snorkel

.

Having owned a Defender 90, it is amazing to see the prices that they are commanding these days. $50,000.00+ for a vehicle that leaks when you drive in rain, can't pass a gas station, has a marginal heater and air conditioner, and is woefully underpowered.
Man I miss that thing..... :D

You could try to bring it in under the international registered law that allows Non usa registration for a year and then the truck has to be either registered or shipped back... You could get that truck in for the year that way...

Yeah but what then after a year. That is what sucks. But I like what your thinking.
