Hmmmm - a friend of mine is Australian - and his parents are still in Australia - I mentioned to him last night the possibility of having his father check out Cruisers before purchase and shipping to the US - he said "sure!"

Hmmmm......

All of mine will fit in one. I would be interested too.
Someone on another forum had done a little research a while back on this and it seems like the biggest issue w/transportation were oil leaks. But that can be resolved.

jsaltlick knows all this stuff...

on the oil leaks I believe you have to get the truck approved by a mechanic as not leaking...which for an old cruiser..........

Forget the shipping containers. I hear the way to ship from Oz is RoRo. (Roll on, roll off) Containers are very 'spensive . . . Aren't we getting close to being able to import 70 series under the 25 year rule?

Good luck finding an 84' 70 series. I bet the guys in aussie and Canada have been keeping those in there garage just waiting for 2009 for us to pounce.

Sub tank for and 80 would be sweet.

It's funny I found this thread this morning. I was actually researching 70's last night. When I get a cruiser, I'm goin diesel and if I can, I'm seriously considering a 70. We do DEF. need one in the club. I'm just glad I can still be here along w/ dbenke to show how nondiscriminatory we are for now.

What do those normally run? You know you can get a new 44 gallon setup complete kit for $1000?

Jeremy

I've seen them go on ebay AU for $200-300

David Benke sorta has a cruiser now!!! :DWoops!!!

I saw a 70 as I was leaving GSMTR. It was parked at a house on the way out to Murphy. Looked really sharp, I think it was blue. I think that would be the ultimate cruiser to own - - make mine a diesel please.

I've read several threads about RoRo'in Cruisers from OZ, using a customs clearance service, etc. Usually tacks a few thousand onto the purchase price, but apparently the purchase cost of most OZ cruisers is pretty low. I know there are some issues with some of the 70s concerning the engines and/or replacement engines. Canada has 70s too, and I am not sure what the issues from there would be (besides rust).

Greg French can help...i think he told me he paid someone to do the RORO thing on his as it was easier in the big scheme of things. Or maybe I was reading something in Overland Journal....me forgets but he will help answer.

First year for 70 series production is 1985. Also FYI. BJ70s were available in Canada 1985-1987 new off the showroom floor. These trucks can be legally imported into the US now because they are Canadian spec which are compliant with US DOT & EPA laws.

The BJ70 at G'smiter was mine. It is a 1986 production model; 24 volt, 3B engine (with an ATX aftermarket turbo) and 5 speed tranny. The color is gray (VW color code). Rust will absolutely be a consideration with any truck out of Canada. Importing a Canadian spec truck can be rather straight forward. I hired a registered importer to handle the paper work because his fee was a less than $300 which was minor compared to ~$2k to have it shipped down. I have heard of people handling all the importation paper work themselves, but I thought my time and freedom of the frustration was a better deal with the RI.

Also FYI, I love my BJ70. My first BJ70 was a 1985 (12 volt electrical system was only clear difference) and it was totaled due to a side impact (idiot ran a red light & plowed into my daughter in the driver's door at ~50 mph and she sustained only a bruised knee). My third BJ70 is also a late 1986 manufacture run, but is very rusty so I have rust free parts coming from Japan to enable it to be restored.
