Anyone know the difference between an early igniter and a later one ? I have one on a 75 40 and wondering what the difference is if trying to use one off say a 77 FJ40 ?

Not familiar with those years, but could the difference be the ballast resistor? It's hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like the 75 has one, but it's not clear that the 77 does?

My 79 ignition has a ballast resistor wire instead of the ceramic resistor mounted to the coil. Not sure when they started doing the ballast that way.

I would think any igniter up to 77 could be made to work. 78 went to fully electronic. I don't know the details of the various 74-77 igniters, but they are essentially electronic switches triggered by the points in the distributor. Possibly some changes in connectors and mounting configurations.

@Coolerman has a dizzy FAQ with some good info.
