Will the borla work on a 100 with the stock skids? I have a huge hole in my muffler and a new one is like $400 bucks. I think I can get an entire Borla Cat Back for $800. I don't want my Landcruiser to sound loud though. Should I just get an OEM muffler? I also run a trailer hitch.

Sounds like that price is very high. Buy a muffler of your choice and have it installed for less than $250

I installed the borla cat-back system last year. High grade stainless, nice rumble, increased sound at highway speeds. I needed a new cross pipe, new muffler, etc and figured with the Borla I would do it once and be done with it. I also have the DT headers and the combination does not seem to have hurt low end torque. The overall smoothness of the powerband is much much better and there is a noticeable increase in performance.

^still only 11mpg with all the full exhaust setup? i'm assuming you lost a few because it's more fun to mash the pedal now?

Why would the different exhaust setup affect MPG? Assuming driving habits remained the same before and after, wouldn't the same go for MPG?

My mileage has not changed no matter what I do, power on/off, headers, free flow exhaust, angry right foot, mellow driving, A/C, the only time it gets up is when I am doing long trips at highway speeds. Of course I had this same problem with my 97 Pathfinder, but it never changed even on long trips. You could drop that underpowered slug off a building and it would still get only 16 mpg while it fell.

Weight & aerodynamics.

well when i got my new exhaust put on in August 2009, it was like i had bought a new car. I'd owned it since new (March 05) and had done 110,000kms when i got it put on.

i couldn't afford a stainless system, but to summarise the post below, it's got ceramic coated Pacemaker headers, high flow catalytic converters and 3 inch free flowing exhaust. Now there are bigger ones - Genie makes them - but i chose the Pacemakers.

I haven't had it dyno'd since (now up to 161,000kms) but pre: exhaust it was a low 80s kW at the wheels. (83 or 84 kW - about 113 HP) but it has significantly more power and economy now. If you see the restrictions at the catalytic converters and the manifolds themselves you'll appreciate why i also get more economy and power now.

You seem to be missing 70hp pre exhaust????

yeah i know!!!. The guys said it was the snorkel causing the restriction and it's a place called the Horsepower Factory and they know what they are doing over there.

It's "supposed" to have 110kW at the wheels for the advertised 170kW flywheel for mine (2005) so yeah it was down a bit. A high flow snorkel is on the list!!! And i have found someone who will make a mandrel bent stainless 4" one for me for around $650 i think it was and i''ll sell the Safari snorkel.

There's a sticky thread over at lcool.org on improving the snorkel flow.

cheers

What is a high flow snorkel? I have ordered the one piece moulded Airtec snorkel.
I am planning to change the extractors (headers) and exhaust in the future.

But to answer your question the [STRIKE]first gen[/STRIKE] older Safari like mine narrows down to about 2 inches in diameter in places and if the installers have done stuff like seen in the second pic above then it could be even more restrictive.

The "high flow" snorkel i have on my list is basically 4 inches diamter from the top all the way through the guard and joining onto the airbox unlike my Safari which varies from 2" to 3" at various spots. It is a custom fabricated, mandrel bent stainless steel snorkel. You see them a lot on some of the competition 4WDs down here and the occasional street registered 4WD too. Edit: maybe instead of "high flow" i should say "less restrictive" ? But you get the idea.

Edit: apparently the current Safari snorkel has addressed some of these issues and it mounts further up the guard and i believe it maintains a 3" diameter all the way through, but i haven't seen one. Someone can correct me on that one.

I put a Borla cat-back on years ago, but it was too quiet for me. Cut off the muffler and resonator and put an SLP muffler on there. It sounds like a SBC now.
