I recently took a FEMA course on National Incident management. lot of bla bla bla planning and resource management and such but I couldnt stop thinking of planning at home, which leads me to my question:

If you could have a vehicle parked in your garage full of gas and gear, just waiting for when a disaster or terrorist attack etc. What would it be and what would it be equipped with. Real world scenario, with out F.U money and not dreamland, but everyday normal civilian gear and practicality

Id like a 55 series with a vortec, winch, a big bull bar(incase of zombies lol) two fuel tanks and solar/deep cell inverter capabilities.

Already have the platform--- My truck (SIG)
Already have all the necessities------ guns & ammo
Food---- aside from the guns & ammo bit, non perishable foods such as canned food and MRE's for about two weeks for two with significant rationing.
Medical---- I have TONS of crap (drugs, bandages, procedure kits, etc.) from my time as a medic and wife is a PA

NEED: to convert my truck to be able to run on biodiesel
-convince wife that buying one of those Cold War Era missile silos is indeed a good idea.

Back Up Plan---- use guns & ammo to acquire missile silo.

Its alot of prep and money for a what if situation, but we live by the motto be prepared right. So why not be really prepared!
Todays global economy and middle east revolutions are creating some scarcitys all ready.
Im not a survivalist but man theres some people out there that would really be screwed without their blackberrys and comforts.

In any kind of emergency, fuel is the first thing in short supply. Everyone needs it, local filling stations run out quickly, and the pumps don't work without electricity to boot. You'd better know ahead of time exactly where and how far you're bugging out to. Unless you're forced out by flood, fire, etc. you're probably going to be better off sitting tight with stored food and water. JMO, YMMV.

Anything that is self-sufficient, robust, well maintained and has very minimal electronics. Computers and other Integrated Circuits would be fried in the case of an EMP event so computer controlled vehicles would be dead.

Thats why I think the pig would be great. Plenty of room for stuff and very robust, easy to fix unless you throw a complicated motor in it. Any ways I dont see too many folks on this forum that use 55s for camping and "expeditions". Poor gas mileage I guess keeps it down in this crowd, but if you need to get to point A from point B when bridges and roads are jammed and theres rubble and obstacles every where I think it would be great.

Yes fuel could be in short supply but theres always siphons, hell I bet theres enough gas in junkyard rigs to get you by for minimal travel. Siphon would be a must

Guns are great too. You can kill almost anything with a 22 and store alot of them little rounds. You could trade meat for other goods if things are really bad.

A pig is very similar to a 60 after removing the smog crap from the 60. Same motor, same tranny, t-case is stronger, axles are the same just a tad wider...

s***, any gas powered LC up to the 60 and just about any diesel powered LC unless it has the 1HD-FTE is fit for this duty.

I like my 2H in a "TEOTWAWKI" situation. No electronics to short in the event of an EMP for either nuclear explosion or strong solar flare. In that situation any vehicle with an ECU will be dead in the water from electronics failure.

if the fit really hit the shan the people who have the needed supplies also have many G&A's and are proficient in the use of them.

to me the ultimate rig is a 60 (i am biased) preferably with a mercedes diesel (parts availibility) no electronics to f with. i keep a two week go bag in my L.C. its just a coleman hiking pack loaded to the gills. its better to be prepared then s.o.l.

its also handy to know about alt. fuel sources. if you got a mech inj. diesel you can run it off of used oil. (why i just bought a 6.2l)

I have mine. Hj61 will work fine 600km range on a full tank and I never go below 1/2 tank. I just need to get the maint up to standards. Be my luck I would be packed ready to go and a driveshaft u-joint will take me out! I don't keep much in the cruiser but most things are close at hand at home. or in our travel trailer.

i have been running a 6.2l diesel on old motor oil and trans fluid for a while now. wvo is to hard to get in my neck of the woods. if things went really bad to many folks know about wvo for it to be a viable fuel source for long. but there will be a lot of abandon cars with a lot of atf, ps fluid, engine oil etc. just filter and heat.
