Not trying to hijack but what do you all use as a tach to lean it out? Can’t help but think my dash tach is way off
Digital timing light.

@2mountainfish , does the digital timing light actually show the timing on the screen? Not sure how it would work like that, but that is what the ads seem to suggest. That would be very helpful in my 62 because it is hard as heck to view the flywheel and adjust the dizzy!

It shows what you set it for. You set the light for 7 degrees, and it will flash right on the timing mark on the flywheel. No hunting for the BB. If you want 9 degrees, put that on the screen and turn the dizzy until the straight mark lines up with the pointer and that will be 9 degrees advance. It displays RPM the whole time on the screen also. You can use white-out ,to paint the pointer and the TDC line on the flywheel and it makes it much easier to see.

So, if you have it set for 7 degrees it will not flash at all until you dial in 7 degrees on the dizzy rotation?

No it will flash, it will just be flashing the fly wheel at 7 degrees advance. If the engine timing isn’t set to 7 degrees you won’t see the BB on the flywheel. You can adjust the timing light forward or back until you see the timing mark and that will tell you what the timing is set to.

Well let me correct myself by saying if the timing is set to say 9 degrees and your timing light is at 7 you will probably still see the timing mark when the light flashes it just won’t be centered in the window.

It will flash at whatever degree you set it at. Turning the dizzy moves the timing mark. A conventional timing light just flashes at TDC #1 cylinder all the time. To set timing at say 7 degrees, you have to turn the dizzy until you see the BB. So any other position is guess work. With a variable timing light you can accurately set your timing to any degree you choose.
