Ah, El Camino De La Morta (the road of death), called the most dangerous in the world. Bolivia, , is building a replacement but cost has brought it's progress to a crawl.

Stremnaya road is called the road of death and it's situated in Bolivia.

The first ones with the tunnels are of the new road which replaces the old Death Highway. Didn't know the new one was open yet. Thanks for posting these pics. If I find the video of it I will post the links. I have never been on the old road but have heard it is quite the trip. It is popular with the extreme mountain bikers. Nothing like shooting down to the tropics from near 14,000'. I know of two bikers that missed corners. The worst is the accidents with the cargo trucks, which are also the main source of passenger transportation. To reduce accidents, it is the only road in Bolivia in which you drive on the left hand side. Its helped but not much according to my Bolivian friends. I am not a great fan of Bolivian roads - or should I say truckers. Drunk driving is common and to ward off the effects of the alcohol they chew coca with a block of lime (calcium).

Hey, Canucksafari, are any of your fellow Coastal Cruisers heading down to Rubithon? There are 3 of us from the Island so far (with two rigs) who are planning on making the journey and thought it might be cool to caravan down.
We've posted on the CC Rubicon thread with nothing heard.

This movie (The Wages of Fear) is set in a fictitious country, but the writer said the setting is actually El Camina De La Morta.

Great movie, by the way - it's about four guys delivering two truckloads of nitroglycerin through the jungle.
