(well that's what Andrea said when I first announced my plan)

So i've been needing a DD for a while now since losing the company truck.
I had bought a 87 300SDL last year with the want of making it very nice looking inside and out but the MB prices were making me balk at some things (motor things are cheap but not interior/exterior things) especially when I lost my job. So I kind of lost interest in it and am either going to sell the car or pull the engine for a "future" project and scrap the rest (4000lbs will still bring in some nice coin)
Then I had my old DD 95 ford ranger single cab..... just too darn small. So I put an add out there to sell it.
Got a few tire kickers that wanted to buy it for $300 or so but nothing else. Then I got an email about a trade for a 84 4x4 suburban. Well the size would be nice for me but at 10mpg i'd rather drive the cruiser. So I told him I wasn't interested.... then I get the 2nd email.... oh its a diesel you say???
Diesel subs from that era could get over 21mpg hwy which isn't too far off from what the ranger got. (23 on a good day)
So yesterday the trade went through.... and i've got a DD that can haul 9 people and still get decent gas mileage (well what I consider decent) and most of the time we drive Andrea's car anyway. And now we have another camping vehicle that I don't have to take a 2nd loan out to pay for gas if we aren't doing any wheeling.
Interior and exterior are rough on this one but the difference between this and the mercedes is there are tons of them lying around since GM sold "ten billion" of them in the 80's so parts are plentiful and cheap.
I'm going to steal a page out of johnny's book and Raptor line the entire vehicle. Redo the interior (already found most of the parts very clean at the pick and pull.
Banks turbo kit down the road.

Maybe if I eve have some $$$ and go crazy a 6bt for this and the 6.2 diesel in the cruiser. :grinpimp:

My grandfather always told me the best health insurance was to drive a large car so that you would not need health insurance if in a wreck. You have a safe car and no payments. Smart choice Id say. MIke

Very nice! You came out very good on that trade.

Nice bro...was wondering what you had in the works! You came out ahead for sure.

Large Triple D's (Diesel, Daily, Driver) for the win. :D

Dude that's sweet. Any interior pics?

A few but it is not the greatest.... the guy was going to do a full resto with a lift kit and banks turbo kit when the wife told him he had to get rid of some of his cars (he has 20 most of them jeeps ) She told him he could get a small pickup for hauling parts though

so the headliner is gone the carpet is in sad shape and the door panels need to be re-done. Thank fully there is an 87 at the pick and pull with a near mint interior.... but getting it might be the hard part. Only have sundays of now and my new job is soo physical i'm coming home limping every night. (i'm sure that will change as my body adjusts though) I don't know if i'm up to a junk yard trip tomorrow.

Nice Al, I always loved the "classic" suburbans of the 80's, even better with a oil burner inside...

Agreed, although my fav would be late 60's early 70's...... I caught myself saying classic also the other day but then thought about it and realized that they are now 75 years old and the oldest continual running vehicle ever. I guess you would have to brake it up like comic books... golden age, silver age, bronze age, modern age

:grinpimp:

Damn it dude quit showing me pics of your truck it makes me a sad panda :crybaby:

Actually looking forward to stealing it for a drive again and roasting the tir.... err I mean gently driving it down the street

To have a hope in hell at catching up to that beast i'd need a 6bt swap and every part they make for it.

I'm seriously guessing that thing is over 1000lbs at the crank.

And i'm really disappointed in this group.... I spent time thinking of a title for a thread that will get a great  response.

Double D's are supposed to be small????:grinpimp:

need to replace both rear quarter just behind the wheel well and the passenger side rocker panel....... so Jerry knowing that you like taking on rusty projects ;)

Very cool Al :grinpimp: I love how that generation of suburban looks. That diesel should run for forever.

How many miles?

Thinking of selling your 300SDL or was it part of the trade? How much you looking to get for it?

okay I thought this was an entirely different thread...about DD's..... :)

Yes the SDL is for sale...i'd love to have both but Andrea won't have that and there are a few key reasons that the burb wins out. send me an email bigalj25@sbcglobal.net my silver star just expired and my paypal is refusing to send woody some $$$ so I can't get any PM"s right now.

After driving this for a week.... and doing 400 miles for about half a tank.... not exactly sure what mpg i'm getting yet but guessing its a 40 gallon tank so about 20 mpg.
I think that this engine is a perfect candidate for a diesel cruiser swap.... a couple hundred lbs lighter (which the cruiser is) and it would shine.

Plans for this.... it is going to be my people hauler, DD, light camping vehicle.

Replace rusted body panels, LMC truck is great for this (wish cruisers had a source like this)
Raptor line yellow
paint grill and all things not yellow to black
replace most of the interior
cruiser crap sound deadening the entire interior
good sound system and possible DVD system

dual electric fans
electric water pump
J code intake
all for a little power improvement and a big mpg improvement

fuel filtration system

dual tank

winch mounted into stock bumper

Yellow sounds pretty good to me :D It's going to be one hell of a loud truck!

Any idea on what you're going to do for the suspension?

Given the proposed color scheme, I suggest christening her "The Hornet" or "Sasquash" (Get it? Instead of Sasquatch, another name for Bigfoot, tweak it to include squash) It would be the perfect friend for our resident Yeti.
