You're wise to have someone personally look at it. One of the guys on 80s Cool saved me from buying a 40th a couple years ago. It had some minor and well photographed body damage from a crossing gate accidentally coming down on its hood, so I was getting it well priced. Listed as non smoker, excellent interior, miles low, etc. I spoke with the selling car operation and established a relationship with the guy I deemed very open and honest. Spoke with him a half dozen times and requested and got additional photos. Made the financial arrangements on my end and settled on a price. Before sending the deposit, one of the guys drove an hour for me to look at it.
I got a call as he was leaving the car lot. Unbelievable. The actual dashboard miles were nearly 20,000 more than he kept claiming, it had been smoked in a lot, the leather had been heavily restored very poorly and you could see the former tears only in person and feel the spots as they were stiff as a board, the driver's floormat was worn through, etc. I am a very skeptical person and yet I nearly wasted $500 on a trip to see this thing. I've heard similar. Apparently, it's become an accepted way of doing business in the age of long distance purchases a la eBay to simply "get somebody into town". Then they drop the price by a grand and most of the time the buyer drives off. So, always have someone look at the car, even if you have to have the seller drive it to a Toyota dealership and pay the dealership an inspection hour with your credit card. Money well spent.
