So like most of you, I am a cruiser fanatic. I have a 2000 fj100 that has been upgraded with the normal 2.5 inch lift, Slee bumpers, winch, ect. I run 33 inch bf Goodrich mud tires.

The picture below was taken from the dash of my buddies jeep. All I have been hearing is how i need to get a jeep because they will stay on the road.

My problem I believe is that the cruiser is so heavy that it cant recover once in the soft ditch.

I am afraid the answer is to drive my fj40 on the mud days... I really like driving my 100 series!

I am hopeful for some advice for better control, and better recovery in the slick stuff. The computer kicks in and prevents me from recovering ... can this be disabled?? would lockers be worth installing? I don't think any more lift is common....

While the heavier 100 series may sink more than a lighter 40 series, there is plenty of slick stuff off-angle that nothing can recover from. Gravity is not your friend once you slide into a ditch like that; no matter what you're driving. Did your buddies jeep or that f250 do any better than your cruiser in that mud? Did either one get in the same ditch and climb out?

Yeah I don't think anything would be getting out of that situation without help.

Great rigs.

I assume your center diff was locked. Did your VSC still kick in and prevent free wheel spin?

rear locker and traction mat, maybe..... The only time I have seen ATRAC really struggle is in really muddy conditions

Hate to say it, but yeah... weight and "wrong" tires were working against you. I disagree with the others - that Wrangler (assuming it had 33" or bigger mud terrains) would've likely popped out of that.

No 4x4 does everything well. I just sold a built CJ... It would've crawled right out of that ditch. But, the first time I tried driving it on icy roads... HA! it was comical. I turned around, parked it... and got the 100.

That spot was just one stop. of many on the day.. The jeeps did better than me..they would land in the ditch, and eventually get enough traction to pull out. we were in and out of the ditch all afternoon.. it was a fun muddy mess!

The f250 was called in to give me something to attach my winch to. he didn't play in the mud much after that.

yes vsc i believe was kicking in, but what i remember the most was the ATRAC doing its thing, then beeping at me for cool down.

That is my main question... if i get a rear locker would it really make that much difference?? also, has anyone developed a method to disable ATRAC? The only time i think this will be needed is in the mud!

That 69' is nice.... Hopefully you leave the nostalgic bullet hole in the door.:cheers:

Getting out of that mess is also a matter of wheelbase. Shorter wheelbase vehicles can get a better angle to climb out. Longer wheelbase vehicles may just plow ahead. If the center differential was locked, VSC should have been off. It's that right front tire that's a problem; it can't climb out of the ditch. Just out of curiosity, did you try backing up and then get up to speed going forward before turning left? Or was it too gooey?

Mr. Jits,

I will keep you posted on any improvements and adventures Oliver goes through !! I am excited to have it!

I went backwards and forwards for some time.. it actually did better going backwards... I believe it is because I had already cleaned out the ditch at that time.

I agree that front right tire was the issue... if I had disengaged the center differential, could I have in theory, sent more power to the wheel that was on the road??

Isn't that what atrac should have done? Stopped/slowed the free spinning tires in the ditch and given traction to the tries on the road?

As slick as that stuff looks, I don't think atrac would help much. 4 low and steady wheel spin helps atrac be more user friendly.

So what's different about the Jeeps aside from the obvious shorter wheelbase, mod wise? What tires are they running? How well do the BFG's clean out?

One elk season we all had to put chains on to deal with the mud. I was driving my 2000 Excursion. Zero fun taking them off. I hunt nicer places now!
