First time poster, I've been looking for a FJ60 for about a year, used to have a 80 CJ7, I have 3 dogs and a toddler, so I've been looking for something bigger and family oriented.

I need your seasoned opinions on this 60, I've been looking for a while and this one just popped up. It seems to be mechanically sound. Owner states rust is only on the body, The back R window cancer spot worries me. Owner says it's desmogged with a weber carb, and he would drive it to Cali with no worries. Odometer is questionable (not sure if this will make it hard to inspect/title). I'm gonna drive up tomorrow and check it out. I have not driven a 60 yet, I've been looking for about a year, what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance for everything I've learned from this site.

@Texaswagon

Welcome to mud! I don’t have much to offer because I have never owned a 60, but did at least want to give you a welcome. I’ve been on the site for several years and have received an amazing amount of help from this great community. I hope you experience the same.

Good luck finding your truck and happy new year.

Whatever you do, please search CruiserShackWA here for an eye opener!

As for that 60, the best advice is to find one as rust free as possible. Always check the frames at the rear especially. Avoid any with roof gutter rust.

There are some damn great people on this forum who can help you. You should post a wanted add in the classifieds and potentials will be offered and probably with links to their builds where you can see the work done and you will get a sense of the seller you are dealing with. Look at their "likes" and posts to see if they are the type of person you want to do business with.

Good luck with the search, if it was me, with a child and 3 dogs, I would look at an 80 series.

Welcome Texaswagon

I agree with fjbj40, post a wanted add and you will have tons of people send you some leads. That is how I found my FJ40. It was not for sale until the MUD member read my wanted add and decided to give me a call. We talked a couple times and I bought it. This is a great forum with a ton of great guys and advice, but beware... there are some "leaches" as well.

Keep doing your homework, talking to people, be patient and a good one will pop up.

You didn't say anything about your experience, goals or budget... are you looking for a project or something you can jump in and drive across the country? Do you have experience doing things like a cylinder compression test. etc? These factors would significantly influence my advice to you. I'll PM you my phone number and you can call me if you want to talk in person :).

The one you are looking at looks like a solid Cruiser but here is my two cents.

- $8000 seems high to me. I am not as familiar with the market in your area, but it looks more like a $5-$6k LC.

- The seller say he is motivated, so you can make an offer. I have bought $8k cars for $2-$3k in the past. It all depends on how "motivated he is...

- I would be a little concerned about "Smokes a little, burns a little oil"! I consider 187,000 miles pretty low. If it is smoking and burning oil, that is an indication of something wrong, so plan on spending some money there. Ask him to have the cylinder compression checked.

- Obviously a 36 year old vehicle is going to need some TLC, so make sure you include in your budget things like replacing fluids, hoses, belts, breaks, etc (unless the PO has recently done all that). I personally plan on spending $300-$400 on any vehicle I buy before I start driving it. If you are paying someone else to do these things it would be more like $1000-$1500.

- If you are new to working on vehicles, I wouldn't buy anything that you have not driven and seen in person. I would even suggest having a mechanic look at it. You need someone with a "trained eye" to look for some of the hidden things that can be deal breakers or big ticket items.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Matthew

Thank you for the replies, I'd like to spend under 10k for a vehicle I can enjoy and dix/upgrade along the way. i really like the 60, not a fan of the 62 or 80. I'm mechanically inclined, ive installed lift kits, break mod/updates drum to disc etc, can do all the fluids, minor carb stuff, some engine stuff, can check the compression myself. everything else I'll use YouTube and this site. I'm looking to find a driver that i can fix along the way. I've got a good job so money shouldn't be a problem, the wife will say otherwise. I should be able to easily put 800 toward it a month. I realize its gonna cost a lot to own and maintain. I was planning on offering 6000. I'd like to turn it into a solid reliable overlander, 33 tires, OME lift, T55 way down the road.

I would move on from this one. I agree with @Vexvader, post what your wanting and someone reputable will reach out to you. I also would avoid cruisershackwa, there are some interesting and fun reading threads based on some recent interactions he is involved in.

The current cruiser has unknown miles and too much rust for my likes. Search areas away from any coastal regions where rust will be minimal.

Pics of undercarriage.

Also of note, the odometer stopped working in 2007 according to Autocheck. I asked the seller about this and how willing he was to sell. Apparently he wants to sell it. Thanks again for the replies, I'll most likely pass this one up, it's a 3 hour round trip drive on my day off. Guess I'll have to spend it with the family. I'll post a wanted ad in the future.

Check daily on the classified section. something will pop up if you post what you want.

Good luck with your search! Happy New Year!

It already sold, was on craigslist for less than a day. I was on my way to check it out, he said he would take 6000, no engine work, no axle rebuilds. No idea of the actual mileage, it's probably over 300k. I'll keep looking. thanjs everyone.

Not a $8000 truck. No more than $5000 IMOP
I agree totally. If I was looking at it, I would offer $3-$4k at most.

I wonder why he did not disclose that in the add ????

Me too!! I really like the grill on the 60. Some people like the 62 better, but to each his own.

It sounds like you are in a good spot... be patient and a good one will come along. I will keep my eye out here an my neck of the woods.

I re-read this thread and just now saw this post. $6000 is a much fairer price, but 300k miles is a little much.
