Well, first post but I hope to buy an FJ40 and have many more. Here is my question; I have found a 77 FJ40 for sale that is not running. The body appears to be is decent shape but the engine is completely torn apart as is the interior and paint. Needless to say, this FJ needs a TON of work to even run much less look presentable. The man that has it for sale has had it for sale for over 6 years and really wants to sell it but he quoted me a price of $6350. This seems really high for basically a shell of a vehicle. Am I wrong and if not what would you estimate this thing to be worth? The passenger rear window is shattered and the interior is full of dirt and dust, the headliner for the hard top is hanging down, it appears that I would have to replace all of the wiring, the engine is in 100 pieces and the paint is hideous. The only thing that it has going for it is that there is just a little rust on the rear quarter panels down at the bottom. It appears to be an easy rust fix. It has the 2 front seats but not the 2 rear side seats and all of the rubber strips around the doors and windows are rotted. Again, the best attribute to this is the fact that the body and frame appear to be in amazingly good shape considering. What are you guys thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Drummond

offer him 10% of that price, i know that even in the us that you can get running cruisers for less than that

Thats about what I was guessing. the problem is that some of these guys see the price on rebuilt cruisers and automatically assume that what they have is worth the same. This thing will take a lot of work and I really did not want to pay more that $1500 for it but I dont want to insult him.

Thanks,

Drummond

Holy crap. That thing isn't worth $500. Where do you live? That asking price is insulting. Post your zip code and let's see if we can find you something a little more reasonable.

With engine torn apart, I am assuming that it has been sitting a while. You have to worry about transmission, transfer, Axle seals, etc.... I would not think it is worth more than $1000, more like $500. I would pass. I bought mine for $4500 with a good strong recently rebuilt engine and medium rust that has all since been repaired. An engine rebuild alone could set you back $2-3K along with everything else that will need work.

There was a pretty good deal on a 71 and a 70 40 in the For Sale section. 2500 obo for two; one parts and the other a runner.

I've bought running rigs, trail ready, for under $2k...I purchased a 72 FJ40 that supposedly ran (tho I never tried) for $75. A 77 in that condition is worth between $300-500....maybe as much as $1000 if the body is REALLY rust free (which I doubt)

Thanks guys, you reconfirmed what I was thinking. I live in Lubbock Tx, area code (806) and zip code is 79413. I will look at the classifieds and the links you guys posted, I really do appreciate your help.

a non-running vehicle in that kind of shape, regardless of the make and model, is not worth much more than what a junk yard will pay for the scrape metal, basically = about $150 - $200.00.

offer him what it will cost to have it towed to your place plus $50.00 bucks (if that - no more than $100 in total). After 6 years, you're doing him a favor to even be interested and it's going to cost him at least that to have a junkyard come and take it off his property for him. If he balks, let him RUST.....

huntsonora,

I picked up my 40 in Dallas for $1250. It has zero rust, and was in a similar condition to yours. However, after a little work, the engine runs great. I wouldn't offer more than 1K to the guy especially if it has been sitting that long.

Damn J; I wish that was closer to me. I'd sell my 40 and buy this one.

It's kinda like dating the hottest chick ever, fake tits, great ass, perfect to ride around in and everyone stares, but you get sick of the maintenance after a while and just want to be with a normal (but still cool) chick. That's me and my Cruiser. I'm ready to dump the "Stripper".

Why don't you put something together to get that thing to Pensacola?

Damn.
