I have a 1996 L/C and I had my belts changed 3 years ago. They are squealing now at start up. I think it is time to change them anyway. So, where should I purchase them from (Toyota dealer or Auto Parts store)? Next, what steps do I take to change out my belts? Is it hard to do? Any and all assistance/suggestions are welcomed! Thanks, all!

Get the belts from C-Dan...seems lots of people have problem with aftermarket belts...and then search- there was a very good thread about replacing the belts about a month ago. ;)

Order Toyota belts and factory service manual (FSM) from CDan. Loosen the AC belt first by loosening the compressor pulley nut, adjuster bolt and lock bolt. Remove belt. Loosen 2 lock bolts on alternator and run a long extension with 12mm socket through the wheel well under the plastic curtain and over the steering box to loosen the tensioner bolt (counterclockwise I believe) all the way until it almost comes out of the lock. Push on the ratchet and extension to move the alternator in, loosening the belts. Install new alt belts and tighten. Either mark the tensioner before you loosen it or be prepared to test belt with a belt tensioner (again, the FSM helps). Set tension and lock all bolts. Install AC belt, test tension and tighten bolts.

I'm doing this right now.......should i grease/lube any of the pully wheels or repack any bearings on anything while i'm there? I have some squeeking going on with the old belts.

GDMFer!

 Is this as far as the alternator will slide? I have the lock nut and the pivot bolt basically hand loose and the damn thing will not slide over enough for me to get the new belts on! I'm about to walk away for a few minutes cause it's got me  . Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had no adjuster bolt showing and the alternator was closer to the block. Can you push in on the ratchet while its on the adjuster bolt?

Loosen the pivot bolt some more (I see you still have 1/2 inch on it from the picture above), that's all needs to be done, IIRC.

On the AC belt, loosen the pulley, pretty much having it falling out for the new one to come in.

OK, thanks, i finally got er done; but not without inventing a few new curse words and a few bloody knuckles on the way. Basically, you need to loosen the adjuster screw all the way so that none of it is showing on the other side. Not as easy as Idahodoug says, but all in all not too bad.
