i lost my keys. thats the short and simple of it
they have a place, a home, a spot i ALWAYS put them...
i had them 2 weeks ago before i left for the (of all places) florida Keys
and when i come home i want to drive my 40 around and my keys are GONE just GONE vanished -poof-
now im sure this ONE time i didnt put them back where they go...
and i have spent the last 3 days looking for them...
they dont travel w/me if im not driving the 40 they are at the house

iv got a budy coming bye later w/lots of keys to FJs and we are going to see if we can find a match IF that dosnt work is there a code somewhere on the vehicle i can use to get another key made???
any suggestions would be great!

When your buddy comes over, find a few of his keys that are pretty worn out and fit sloppily in the ignition. Jiggle them in/out/up/down while turning it. You just might be lucky enough to get one that acts like a notorious jiggler key Toyota car thieves adore.

remove the cylinder out of the passenger door and take it to toyota, the key code is on that cylinder and they can cut new keys

iv already thought about swapping out the ignition switches... any idea how much they are?

and the FJ40 came w/soft doors (no locks) and the doors on there now are from another 40... :-(

You can also get keys from Classic Key Men. Do a search here and you'll find them. I had them make me a couple of keys for my '72 doors cause the p.o. lost them. Really reasonable prices and quick shipping. Is this for your 1980? Column ignition? Same key for the doors as the ignition? If so, get the numbers from the door tumbler like M1GZ said.

if you get one of the sloppy keys to turn the ignition, pull the bat cable, pull the column cover. you'll see a small hole. turn the key while pushing a wire into that hole. it will release the tumblers. then take the tumblers to a locksmith and have them make new keys.

You know that as soon as you get your key situation straightened out, the original set is going to reappear. Make sure you check all your pants, jackets and whatever else you could have been wearing prior to your trip. This kind of stuff drives me nuts. Good luck.

one of the keys got my gas cap open... i removed that lock and i can take it to someone to see if they can rekey it... i just hope they are the same... i had two keys on that ring and i unfortuniatly drive my 40 so irregularly i dont know if one key worked the ignition and one was for the gas cap or if they were just copies of each other...

batcon i actually pulled every pair of jeans out of my closet and checked every pocket b4 i put this up...

spotcruiser thanks for that second link! how sure are you that the t61c code is right for me? id rather order 2 or 3 at a time

-as im typing this my road side assistance just called me back- they found someone that will come do the job for 70 bucks the road side assistance pays up to 50 so this is a 20 dollar mistake for me... a 20 dollar mistake i could have avoided had i simply made a 1.5$ spare key...
ohwell... Lord knows i have made much more costly mistakes than 20$$!!!

I have several sets of keys for both my 76 and 78. In addition to my OEM keys, I have Taylor #T80R, ILCO #T61C, and ILCO #TR33-X137. They all work.

By the way, I goofed up with the first link. It should have been:

Key Men - Catalog #: T61C

temp solution

If you want to wait and see if it turns up and you have a remote starter in your tool box then

run a wire from the batt through a toggle sw in the cab to the plus side of the coil (in line fuse if you want to be on the safe side)

hook up a remote starter like for doing tune-ups and run it from cab

say ignition! contact! every time you start until your key turns up

then get a spare

a temp solution anyway

FOr the hitachi equip key mentioned above go by any equip rental like hertz or sunbelt they should make their own keys cause customers lose them all the time!

I try!! I feel like a squirrel. Constantly looking for stuff I "put away" to keep from losing it. Oh well, I've got one consolation-----I've got a brand new memory,--It's never been used!

Emergency key guide.

Run wire from positive terminal of battery to coil.
Jam Big Fxxxin' Screwdriver (BFS) in between solenoid positive pole and big battery pole.

Or option 2, jam BFS into lock and turn.

Drive vehicle :)

Sadly this is all it takes to hotwire most any pre 80's car.

Toyota made a new one for me... even one of those oem style ones with the plastic coat. If I recall, he just used my VIN, never even looked at my old key, pulled out one of those neato cutter deallies, cut the key and started it. Didn't even charge me for it 'cause he was so happy to see an old 'yota on the road still!

If you want to drive your cruiser, take the twoscrews out of the bottom of the plastic cover in front of your steering wheel. Remove the covers and you will see a plug opposite of the key held on by a phillips screw. Remove the screw and the plug will come out. Turn the spade on the plug and your cruiser will start and run.
