I have e-mailed Marlin but have not heard back yet...Ill give em call and see if they can do it. But is there any shops you guys might know that could machine and spline the center of a gear?

pull out your yellow pages and flip to machining services or something like that...

You should be able to find a local place with an EDM that can do it.

I know that when the big trucks at my buddies rock quarry need gears etc they get them made semi-locally and that is in bumblefxxx north carolina.

I have some bad luck . They have a saying around here..."two weeks late is a day early in St. Augustine". I was just looking for some one trusted...but if nothing comes of it, ill go for local joint.

Thanks, will call most of the places today and find out what they say.

Hi Al,

Are you looking to machine a ID or OD spline. If its a OD i agree with Gary, Moser will be the place to go. If its a ID spline you need to find a local machine shop with a wire edm machine or a gear shop that does gear hobbing. You will also need to provide them with the info to generate the tooth profile. If you know what the specs of the mating part are I can help you with this.

The gear I need machined is, also an output. The output would have to be cut off and the center of the gear would have to be drilled/machined out and splines would have to be cut on the inside of the gear be able to accept a new shaft in it. I dont know the measurements I was just planning on sending the shaft with the gear. But' if its better to measure it and get the specs my self I will. Thanks for the help..

I have had Jack from CTM do some broaching for me. Great work and cost effective. It seems he is always quite busy though. He was kind enough to add my work to another run of parts he was doing.

Hey Lowtide,
There are quite a few right answers posted previously ie: EDM and the old way of broaching, but theres one important point you should also consider as it is a power transmition type gear. Almost all gears, whether inside or outside spline or gear, are all heat treated. Outside gears are usually induction hardened, inside are usually heat treated the conventional way in an oven.
Any reputable machine shop who says they can do your splines should not bat an eye when you ask for the gear to be heat treated as well. Or at the very least, have the gear case hardened. (this way it should last a LONG time)
