Sony Xplod XS-R1641 4-Way Speakers 6.5". 220W Max Power and 45W rated. I got them for $49 but you can find them cheaper online (I didnt want to pay shipping and wait)

They fit right in with no mods in the front and I was able to keep the stock grills. Just to make sure there would be no rattle I place a rubber grommet between the speaker and where each of the 4 screws were set.

Im no audiofile, but they sound great to me. I blew out my OEMs within 20 minutes of installing my new headunit. I'll probably replace the rear doors with the same thing. They go great with my 2 12" Alpine Type R subs in the rear. :D

Sorry no pics, but they fit perfectly. Ive read other threads about 6.5"s, thats why I tried these out. Plus their mounting depth is shallow- only 1 5/8".

6.5"s are supposed to fit in the rear doors too. I'm going to confirm that, and put another set of these in the rear doors. I noticed today that with my seat in the normal driving position I probably can hear more sound from the rear door speakers, because my seat is slid all the way back and reclined slightly (not like those idiots you see driving Acuras that are practically laying down.)

6 1/2" ??? i thought the front doors where 5 1/4" on 80's rear 4"

Front can be either/or. Some have even stuffed 5 1/4's in the rears.

Any idea on how the Xplod GT1625A compares to the Xplod XS-R1641 in size? I work at Sony and I believe the R1641 are older models so I can't buy them with my employee discount :(

The size and depth look the same, but my speakers are 4-way and those are 2-way.

Yeah I know :( I can get those for like $30 though... so... if I wanted it to sound better I would just go with components but I don't really care too much with the LC. I just wonder how much a 4-way speaker would sound compared to the 2-way? Any personal experience?

If you added a set of tweeters it would sound the same. The 2 extra speakers are just 2 built in tiny tweeters. So if you are going with components, dont worry.

But for $20 more, I'de just buy the 4 way and not have to wire up another set of speakers.

i put 6.5 in the rear doors but could not use the factory grills, but it wasnt an issue for me, they all sound much better even with the factory head unit, just a little weaker in the back

I've seen many car audio sites that have fitment guides, some say 5.25 in the front and some say 6.5 it depends on where you look. Seems that both are right since some here have done 5.25 and some 6.5. I'm going to look into these sony's. I would rather have a bigger speaker since it fit's with no mods as you describe. I would assume the '91 isn't any different in the door panel than a '95?

With the rears, did you screw the speakers going through the door panel?

I wouldn't give a blanket statement to 6.5's fitting in the rear. I have found that it is totally dependent on the size and depth of the magnet. 1 7/8" is as deep as you can go mounting on the outside of the door pannel front and rear and the rear holes in the sheet metal for the mags, most of the time, have to be modified to take a larger magnet if you upsize the speaker from the 4" stock size I just put a set of 5.25 Rockford Fossgate's in the rear and had to chop out the opening in the sheet metal for the magnets to squeeze in there. They are 2" deep and just slightly rub on the window riser at full open. I mounted them to the outsude of the door pannel as well. Neither he front or rears have the stock grills. FWIW.

This is worthless without pics

The max depth the rear will accept is 2" as I understand. The opening for the rear's is very small, even if you find speakers 2" or thinner the opening will have to be enlarged.

So...did you ever install the 6.5"s in the rear doors as you mentioned? Please advise...Thanks

This is what I posted in our local forum. I intalled the items below yesterday. Specifically 6.5 in the front doors.

Man I finally did it, the 16 year old radio finally went , plus 6 new speakers. Wow!! I am actually cranking my radio now to JACK FM.

Here is a line up of my install: Nothing over board, looked for Sale items etc.

Sanyo CD/CASS/Radio- CD-R/CDRW Playable, Full Logic Control
200 Watts, 50 x 4 channels, Bassxpander. Blends in well to dash
$ 200.00 Use I still listen to cassettes:eek:

Front Dash Speakers: Clarion SRC916 3.5 inch 60W Peak MIPP Woofer
$ 30.00

Front Door Speaker:s Blaupunkt 6.5 inch Thin Line. 180 W Max $40.00

Rear Door Speakers: Fusion 4 inch 120W $20.00

I had them disconnect Far Rear speaker, and remove the Toyota Amplifier. I kept on all my matching speaker covers, but wondering if I should put the new covers on the doors. What do you all think. Oh yeah now I have a new cubbie space to through my cell phone, etc in.

I know this does not enhance my off road abilites, but should get my blood pumping, leading to more risky behavior.:cool:

The ones in the lower dash? Just unscrew the grills and take them out. Less than 2 mins to remove them
