Hi All,

I'm relatively new to the forum, after picking up a HZJ80 mid 2019. The car is a pretty standard DX and that's mostly how I plan to keep it, with a few additions to make it more comfortable and reliable! I’ll let the pictures do the talking though.. I’ve uploaded some photos from my years worth of travel in the big fella. A lot of camping trips with the boys and my lady, mostly!

All I’ve really done on it since I’ve owned it is some general maintenance and servicing, and replacing the drivers seat!

The day I bought it! A 600km round trip to get it.

Camping on the way home!

New drivers (old) seat. Payed far too much for it, but I’m yet to see one unripped in vinyl!

A lot of days in the national park! It’s been a great rig so far, but with 500,000km on the clock, a few things keep popping up every month or so that are all pretty easy to repair thank goodness.

Nice truck. Thanks for posting the pictures. Like seeing the difference from the US.

Thanks!

Some more photos from my adventures. It makes a good subject 😂

I’ve got an oil change planned for weekend and need to put the grease gun on my drive shaft UJ’s etc. Is everybody just using bearing grease in the nipples for universal joints?

I also need to work on my sleeping arrangements for the rear of the car. Just storage situation.

I’m using Valvoline SynPower, a full synthetic grease that is moly fortified in a lithium base.

DX's are the bomb! All of the capability and none of the unnecessary decorations, trinkets and adornments. They have manual window winders, part time 4x4, vinyl floor, no turbo, minimal electronics, a transfer case lever for L4! I love them.

Service done over the weekend and sorted the wiring for my spotlights out! I am using a patch harness between the headlight bulb and wiring plug and a new era relay (actually a very cool little relay). Some more bushes need to be done (rear sway bar) and have found a few things to monitor over time..

Here’s the spotties working (after f*cking around for hours only to find a conventional four pin relay I had bought new was f*cked)

(Don’t mind the oil spill on the driveway 😅)

And a super cleaaaan surf I found out for the day yesterday

So the Poverty Pack is a DX? I have one similar to yours!

So I'm about to pull the trigger on some tundra steelies, the 16x7 +15 variety. Buying them from stockwheels.com. Just checking in to see if any of you guys have had any experience with this company good or bad, just to make sure I'm not about to get a set of wheels sent from the US that are absolutely rooted.

I ordered some Tacoma Steelies from the USA with another guy from here in Australia, it has been an absolutely interesting time trying to import 12 individual wheels 😂 they are coming via see so they’ll still be 4-5 weeks I think!

In the mean time, I made some curtains.

Then I had to work out a new bed situation for my up coming trip (two week road trip to two different stops in Queensland; Byfield National Park and Carnarvon Gorge). Thanks to a lot of info on here I was able to whip something up in a day and fairly cheaply ($250 all up)

After this I decided to replace my battery tray as it was cracked and the battery was sliding around. I replaced it, in doing so found corossion on an AC hardline from battery acid leaking all over it. Decided to wash that off.. then I hear the tiniest hissing noise... pin hole in my AC hard line. Luckily I have a good air conditioning mechanic around the corner who welded in a new line for a fair price. A few more things to look at before the trip but I am excited!

Well, I just returned home from a 2000km round trip in the landcruiser over two weeks. We camped in the back for a week of it and it all went pretty well, considering I'm 6'3". The car performed really well, some great 4x4ing and great on the highway. Fuel consumption went through the roof when I was punching along the highway a bit too fast, but it's just so easy to do on some of the straight roads.

Only casualty is my front diff. I believe I either need a new housing or to have the housing straightened. When the front axle seals etc were replaced, the front left axle was very difficult to remove. So I'm thinking it has a bent housing on the long side. Is this common? Basically, as after doing 200km on the highway I would pull over and the front left free wheeling hub had turned half a turn from the free position. Slowing down there was a whining/clicking noise that sounded driveline related. So, I think I've flogged the wheel bearing with axle oil breaking down the grease in the hub.

Any thoughts on this?

I've attached some photos of the trip, hope you enjoy them.

My 80 is a DX also and it currently is steadily approaching 700 k km's on the clock. With the front axle/diff housing the best way to get an idea of whether it might be bent at all is through a full wheel and steering alignment check/adjustment and getting the report the place produces which should tell you all the data before anything was done and another one after things were adjusted.

Sweet! I hope mine lasts just as long. I'm loving driving it, and loving using it for what it was designed for. Any pics of yours?

Yeh, that's mainly what I'm basing my thoughts on. After an alignment I realised -2 degrees camber on the sheet and inspected further and realised the lean on the LHF. I've been quote $250 for a straighten with the diff in the car which I'm leaning towards vs $400 for a housing which I will then have to put everything from my diff in to as well as checking it for 'straightness'.

Quick update! I received my wheels a few weeks ago, got the tyres on which solved a mega vibration I was having through the floor (thank god). Now I’m booked into to have my LHF axle seal replaced in a couple weeks after having the axle straightened. If this doesn’t work I think I’ll be hunting down a new front diff which has already proven to be an annoying experience, with people chasing $1800+ for a hub to hub diff. Anyway, we’ll see how it goes.

Happy Christmas and New Years from down under, everybody! I hope you've all had a beaut holiday break. I was busy in the landcruiser, with lots of day trips and the like. I can't fault it, it's such a reliable car. Not that I push it to it's limits, it's just so enjoyable to drive always.

Next up I think I will need to put some work in to repairing the rust. I am still undecided about what to do about painting the car though, so anyone with experience repainting their cruiser, feel free to chime in! I don't need it to be a show car, I just want to prolong the life of the body for as long as possible.
