Hey Gents, I'm trying to help out an orphanage in Haiti that has a bad gearbox on their HZJ78 Troopy. Specs I know are as follows:
Model:HZJ 78L-RJMRS

Frame # :JTER371J900016307

Engine: 1HZ. 4146 mL

The origin and year of the truck is unknown, I'm trying to find that info out, but phone lines are pretty unreliable and the language barrier doesn't help. I'm assuming it's an early 2000's model.

Anyway, I have been able to search out that, depending on year, it is running either an H55F, H151F, or R151F. I'm getting pictures of the broken parts sent to me, but my question is, are all of these trannies compatible? Meaning, does it matter which tranny we install - do they all bolt up the same?

Second question would be does anyone know of a place to source a replacement tranny for an HZJ78? I have secured shipping from Utah to Haiti, I just need to get it to Utah.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Depending on the exact tranny and what parts are broken, any number of people can get you parts--all the way from Canada to ABQ to Costa Rica...

Lots of parts suppliers can get you what you need.

We just need to know what you need.

:)

Here in Australia, the HZJ78 only came with the R151F, doesn't matter what year.

The H55F was in the earlier HZJ75.

The H151F (or H150F) was in the factory turbo diesel HDJ78.

If it has the R151F, then I don't think the others would bolt up. Different bellhousing, input shaft, crossmember, etc.

The early HZJ78/79 with the R151F had a problem with a 2 piece output shaft, where the sleeve on the output shaft would shear off the splines, leaving it with no drive.

Was fixed by the factory after a couple of years, maybe sometime in 2003, with the 2 piece output shaft/sleeve being replaced by a 1 piece shaft.

Haha, thanks Onur. I too need to know what I need.

I've been sent part numbers linked to a parts catalog picture, but I can't get my email to download it. If/when it comes through, I'll post it up.

I read about this in another thread. Although, I'm not sure the truck is from Australia - it's LHD. Maybe that doesn't make a difference? Did they make the 78 mated to an R151 anywhere else? And I'm 99% certain it's not a turbo.

Well, a new OEM R151 is available in the US. Ready to go.

Parts availability for R151's are pretty decent through Toyota here in the States as well.

Let's see what you've got and we can go from there, though I won't be able to check the pipeline till I get back to work tomorrow and log into the Toyota distribution system.

Thanks Onur, I'll be in touch. I've also asked for info off the VIN plate on the firewall. We'll see what I get.

At a minimum, I should have parts numbers which may help determine the model.

I have seen the 1 piece shaft on a German website, and it mentioned the problem with HZJ71/74/78/79, so I assume that it was a problem elsewhere, and with LHD.

If you have access to the Red Cross in Haiti there is a good friend ( and Land Cruiser lover ) working in there .. he's Panamenian ( fluent in english too ) and maybe he can help .. since they are working with lot's of Cruiser there .. Peter Finlay ..

OK, here's the parts list that needs replacing. Not sure this is from a parts catalog, looks more like an exploded view from a users manual. But, smarter minds than me might be able to figure out what model it is from the parts list.

Parts needed are labeled:
1- 33348 2- 33321V 3- 33336 4- 33335C 5- 33331 6- 33411A 7- 33368(No. 2)

It may be an option to purchase these parts and have their current tranny rebuilt, but I'd rather see what a new one would cost before trusting an unknown mechanic to do the rebuild.

Thanks Tapage! Do you have contact information for Mr. Finlay? If so, I can provide him with the address and GPS coordinates for the orphanage and landcruiser locations. I would just need him to check out the VIN plate for the transmission model and shoot that back to me. If you have his contact, send me an email: jktrinnaman at gmail dot com. I also have a friend who will be in Haiti this weekend that might be able to make contact with him.

The diagram is from (or is the same as) the diagram in the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC).

The part numbers seem to be the same as those in a year 2000 as well as a year 2006 HZJ78.

I priced up a replacement R151F a few weeks ago, it was something like $2600 Australian dollars from my local Toyota dealer.

SimonInAustralia, you are awesome! Thanks for taking the time to figure that one out. It's starting to look like we are talking about an R151F. I haven't yet been able to get VIN info out of Haiti, but they did send the following two pics. The first is the truck. Yep, seems to be an HZJ78. The other is a pic of the removed, broken transmission. Is there any way to tell from the pics what model it is, or are they all too similar to accurately tell?

Thanks again for all of your help, Gentlemen. If I can't get VIN info by the end of this week, I've got a friend traveling to Haiti next week who will get the info.

Still no word from Mr. Finlay. I'm sure he's busy.

I think it will be an R151F.

Mine has a Toyota build plate on the firewall that lists the transmission as R151F.

I think you may be correct. I've pointed the folks in Haiti to the plate on the firewall, but they claim they can't find anything.

Mr. Finlay just contacted me and offered his help. I'll be calling him shortly.

Looking at the straightness of that shifter looks like the r151, the h15x shifter sit closer to motor and has more bend in stick , the h55 shifter in 7x series sit even closer to motor so more bend so it dosnt hit the aircon vents as such
