Hi guys

I have a HZJ 78 trooper , originally with 1HZ
Then fit in a turbo kit , everything ok for 100.000 km .
But after a friend of mine had Made a nice hole in 1 piston with the same car and set up , I decider to sell the 1HZ .
And swap in a nice HTD from a Toyota 80.
Great move , Torque is lower in rpm , and high in kgm.
I am super happy .

Reablity , just to say that UN , red Cross, MSF, ecc are all using Toyota HZJ with 1HZ motors.
The reason is that the construction of the car is bomb proof , and the motor is even tougher .
In Africa you see many 1Hz with at least 500 /700.000 km on the clock running every day.

Ya~ just make sure keep n take care of your truck^^ than u can use this truck the longer time✌️

i would love to know more about the "friend" and his driving habits, mileage of engine when turbo installed. condition of engine when turbo installed, which turbo, what exhaust temps he was achieving, fuel setting, towing or just DD ...
cheers

Than u nid do research n homework to know about that u say✌️

so this is what i came across, if it is the same person that blew the engine:
"
she had a similar /worst problem.
the solution was to fix the diesel pump , and the altitude compensator.
the car was driving fine from 0 to 2000 mt apron.
but when climbing hills and / or going in above 2000 mt the car was not performing , smoking black and heating.
the solution is to go to a mine !"

smoking black and over heating - too much fuel. note: he didn't say it was turbo'd. no mention of a pyro.
this would explain why the "friend" burnt a hole in the piston. abuse. simple enough. give me any engine and i will break it from abuse. that doesn't mean the engine is faulty. we have discussed the death of 1HZ due to turbos over the last few years on this forum. when asked for specifics then the true reason comes out. abuse is the main cause.

maybe some thinks the person blowing the 1HZ and the one in overheating are the same !
they are not !

friend 1 ,
bought a brand new HZJ78 , with regular 1HZ engine and put on a turbo kit from a specialized workshop, since day 1.
max pressure was 0,8 Bar , was using the truck regularly , made trips in Africa 1-2 times a year .
driving mode on normal roads was what I would consider normal , max speed 120 km /h .
never overloaded . never towing.never showed signs of overheating ,
he blowup when he had 85000 km on the clock !
I think there was an unhappy combination of several factors that lead to this failure.

friend N2
is driving a regular hzj 79 with 1HZ non turbo , in south america
but when climbing found out that things were not working right .
fixed the altitude compensator and diesel pump , and now rides happily .
from 0 mt to 5000 without overheating and smoking black fumes.

ah, 2 different friends with 2 different results.
did friend 1 have a pyro installed at the same time as the turbo? water temp and pyro run completely independent of each other and tell different stories.

friend #2 is lucky.

I would love to see the injector. Inline 6s always go on 1 or 6. Lack of air. Plenum, port and polish the intake manifold could help even out the AFRs in each cylinder.

Honestly it comes down to the tune.

Your nuts to not put a boost comp on one and not have a pre-turbo egt gauge. Its like buying a lotto ticket, going on hopes and dreams....
The boost comp will give a proper fuel increase with properly matched AFRs without being really low AFR wise when your not running boost.

People give these things a bad rap.
Honestly I think it comes down to a few things. If guys can hammer the TD42s the 1HZ's can take some punishment.
There are guys getting power out of these things with good results. Run good EGTS and AFRS your golden....

Boost will not kill your engine, your right foot and a bad tune will. I love the kits that say they only boost 8lbs. You can still blow the 1hz up running that boost and AFRs 16:1 if not worse and 1400f pre turbo.
Your far safer running 15lbs, no intercooler, boost comp with a proper tune at 20:1 AFR with a max egt of 1200f pre turbo.

Either way people think we are playing with fire. So be it, nuts makes the world go round.
