Hi

I am traveling right now through Canada with my HZJ75 and so far it's really great! Didn't know this car is such a rarity over here, now I know how the celebrities feel! ;)
Anyway... I installed an AllAmericanImports Turbo myself before I left and it's running all great! The boost compensator though I didn't have anymore time to install and have it with me.
I left Edmonton yesterday and am heading to Yukon now, then coming back to Calgary and at the end going to Vancouver. Is anyone or does know anyone in this area that could help me install this Turbo Compensator? I did lots on this car, but the ESP is kinda critical to do somewhere on a parking lot in middle of nowhere if something goes wrong!

I got another pal doing the same trip with his HZJ78 and his ESP made big trouble 2 weeks ago so that he couldn't drive anymore. It's fixed now and he was told to use diesel additive because of the low sulfur diesel you guys have. I didn't feel anything YET, but what do you recommend for your Diesel fuel with an 1HZ engine?

Thanks in advance!

Michel

A boost compensator is going to have to be installed and calibrated by an injection shop, the pump re & re can be done by a shop that is familiar with the 1HZ and the procedure. Expect at least a couple of days of downtime.

What are you talking about "ESP" ??

All fuels are ultra low sulphur, additives are recommended on all injection pumps but especially rotary pumps. I would suggest a proven fuel additive - Opti Lube or Stanadyne, for example. Others like Howes, Power Service Diesel Kleen is complete junk.

Here's an article for you to read: Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Nothing wrong with 2cycle oil mixed 200:1 and a bit of 4plus premium

Ateb in Vancouver could help you out
If you were on the island I hear John is your guy...

Hmm I do have the tool to measure the injection point... but I was told that the boost compensator doesn't need any adjustment afterwards? Now I am confused...

Yeah, I already wa told by Optilube that they got some in BC in some little village in middle of nowhere, unbelievable! Will get it there, heading now from Jasper to Price George...
I drove now 9000km so far without problems... hope it didn't hurt the IP (sorry, ESP is the german shortcut for IP!) I wasn't aware of this ULSD problem here! I thought the japanese have since a long time ultra low sulfur...

Yeah, I am going to Vancouver and then to Vancouver Island.
What about SOR in Los Angeles? Is that a good adress?

You came all the way from Switzerland and didn't bring a camera. MUD members crave adventure photos. ( especially ones that feature your Cruiser ):)

Although the camere broke before Lake Superior where we were AMAZED by the nice beaches we still made already some pictures.. on some you will see the cruiser or also the making off... only a small part is in english sorry... but pictures say more than 1000 words! :)

I also have an all american turbo in my hzj75.
I fitted the turbo myself but had the boost compensator installed by Marc from all american. It took him about 2 hours.
The people from all american are very helpful and if you call them or send them an email, they will be more than happy to help you.
The installation looked straightforward enough and the only special tool i saw was a pressure gauge to read the turbo pressure during the test drive.
Setting of the esp / ip was more or less the point when the exhaust gasses turned black. If you're not sure about it, then better stay on the safe side and give a little less fuel.
Be sure that the engine gets enough air. I had to break away every other plate from the (original toyota) snorkel intake so that the gaps became wider.
If you like i can send you some pictures.

Forget SOR for that. Marv Specter has a ton of parts (also diesel parts) but knows little about the diesels, as they were never sold in the US. I'd strongly recommend doing this in Canada, as you'll find much more experience there.

Hi michel,
Why don't you contact maarten from all american, he's alway's very helpfull!
Maarten@all-american.nl

Regards
Mike

Sent from my iPad using IH8MUD... fun starts where the road ends

Marten sold me that thing! :) He told me it's an easy task, but everyone I ask tells me different... so that's why I am unsure to try this on a Walmart Parking in middle of nowhere in Canada! :)

To be honest, I emailed those Diesel garages that are often written off here in Vancouver Island and Vancouver but none responded to my request. Seems that they are not interested or got to much work...

Hi michel,
Does this image help ?
http://www.ontroerend-goed.be/fuel pump 1HZ 1HD-T.doc

I had the ip with hac (altitude compensator) as on the picture top right.
The small kit for the boost compensator (small bag with some bits and pieces for 100 euros) doesn't fit on this one so I needed to replace the whole cover of the ip.

Good luck

Wout

Thanks for the picture!
Yes, I got the HAC top cover and the kit I got is the COMPLETE top cover of the IP...
GPL in Calgary got not time, they just answered my email.. I will retry ATEP in vancouver by phone, email didn't get responded...

I already left Calgary and GSL didn't have any free time for the next 2 weeks.. will try ATEB although they don't seem to get my emails or are too busy to respond...

At least I got now new injectiors and readjusted the IP on a camping in Lake Louise. The car suddenly startet to miss a lot and smoke white A LOT! The next morning it was like running on 3-4 cylinders, so I changed the only 25'000km old injectors with fresh ones. It did help, but the engine still missed.
Then I readjusted the injection timing and I measured 0.90mm instead of 1.03-1.09mm! I set it to 1.05mm and now it runs better then ever! I hope that 0.90mm doesn't mean that something did worn a lot?! I guess it was injection too late thus generating the white (unburned diesel) smoke?

Engine got 150'000km, of what I made 20'000km in Canada.
Is it normal for an IP to need such a sudden readjustment or is it because I didn't use any Diesel lubrication additive for the first 18'000km? (mostly done in east Canada...)

Call Dave McCollough in saskatoon if you are driving through there. He rebuilds pumps for the mines but has his own business (Rebulds for ENS Industrial as well), he is very skilled and has built 2 pumps for me including installing a boost comp from All American that I ordered. Works greta, never smokes even under full load from 0-15 pounds, 1600-full rpm.

PM me for his number if needed.

Your truck will be fine, no damage just run some lube in it when you can.

Louis

Louis - thank you for the tip!!! But I am already in Revelstoke, BC and heading now to Vancouver & Vancouver Island! Saskatoon I passed about 2 months ago...
Yeah, using now the Optilube stuff, got a whole stinky gallon under my seat! :)

Can you post his business contacts?
