Hi all ,
Crushers , that home made tool is exactly what I needed. It took me hours and hours to get the gear box back in, I got to the point late on Tuesday night where I physically ran out of strength to go any further. I called a mate the following morning , it still took us 2 hrs to get it in, your dead right in saying the pilot bearing is the hardest to line up.... I got the gear box all the way in by myself but couldn't get the last 10-15mm in! It was a real mission to refit. For anyone going to attempt this job I strongly reccomend you are set up with the right tools from the start. I was using an atv jack that didn't quiet have enough hight , so ended up having to flattn the tyres etc to lower the truck! PIA to say the least ! After doing the job, I so wish I made that tool up, it would have been perfect, we ended up using a big lever and rolling the gear box over slightly , I was one very happy man once we got it in!
Couple of problems along the way..... Trying to get my levels right I lowerd the motor too far, the exhaust has had a hairline crack at the waste gate assembly for some time but it ended up snapping of with the dump pipe ending up on the shed floor! I have now had it welded back on and seems ok!
While the support was off I replaced the gear box mount, I've had a new one sitting in the shed for a couple of years so it was the perfect time to fit it!
Axle studs....... Definately not a wheel bearing problem, it wasn't till I had a close look at the studs (picked them up off the street) I noticed that half of the studs have been broken for some time , 3 of the snapped studs were shiney ( new brake) while 3 were black and looked to be broken for some time!
I struggled to get the broken studs out as they had bured the hub really bad , didn't stuff around with it , ended up replacing the hub , studs, and dowls!
Going back almost 2 years ago I had a wheel fall off on me . Was only going slow when it come off but , I am suspecting that this problem could have been caused by this ! The studs were not replaced after the wheel fell off !
Metal filings in engine bay ...... I can only think of one reason for this , as stated in an earlier post I have very recently done a full brake / bearing overhaul , I went all out , resealed the calipers, new rotors, pads, hand brake, full bearing replacement including swivel hubs! I am not certain but fairly confident in saying the metal throughout the engine bay has been coming from the front brakes bedding in! BTW my cruiser now stops extremely well , anyone interested I use TRW brake pads, they are soft, dirty, but work very well ! As for the handbrake....... God there s*** in these 70series ! Mine works ok, much better but it's still crap, would never rely on it !
Thankyou very much everyone who responded to my post ! Very much appreciated !
Crushers...... Your just a legend man!! Hahaa , would love to meet you one day !
