Hello everybody,

hope some toyota black-belt heavyweight can crack this one. :)

I have a LHD HZJ74, year 2001, which got 1HDT engine, H151 transmission and HF2AV tcase swapped over from 1994 HDJ80 (EU spec).

Mechanically, things are working fine, however, gearbox and tcase shifters are in different positions, meaning that existing mat, shifter's rubber boots and transmission tunnel cover don't fit (as expected). I am now trying to make it all look as close to OEM as possible. If it is possible.

In theory, in ARL and/or GCC markets, there were
- HDJ7* models with 1HDFTE engine, H15* gearbox and HF2A tcase (only RHD)
- FZJ7* with 1FZ engine, H15* gearbox and HF2A tcase (1FZ engine block should be same size length wise as 1H* to my understanding and they came as LHD too)

... so the transmission tunnel cover, rubber boots and mat for this combo of body, engine, tranny and tcase should exist, example from FZJ74L, year 1999:
- transmission cover: 58013-60011
- boot: 58280-60150
- mat: 58510-6B840-B1

BUT... by checking and comparing the pictures of parts and AU 70 series to my situation I realized that the position of shifters is again different (mine is typical EU spec 80 series with MTM).

... while on FZJ74L position is like this.

After reading through treads I realized it could be down to shifter towers, shifter's stick shape (of gearbox? tcase?), possibly bellhousing and ... many other things.

Can somebody shed some light on that? Possibly suggest a solution, maybe part numbers?

Big thanks. This is worth few cold ones! :)

The shifter tower as you call it is different, or mounted in a different orientation which puts the shifter in a different position. The gearbox casing is the same.
Shifter location could potentially be altered, but you'd need to do some homework comparing parts diagrams to figure out what parts are different.
Shift rails, shifter mount etc.
Then, the gear box would need to be dismantled to swap stuff over.

Transfer case shifter is mounted with brackets on some models, not bolted directly to the casting like the 80 series has.

70 series t case shifters mount on right side of transmission for hf1a t case. Amayama etc have the late model covers, 58013-60071 for h15x transmission.
Will require work for an 80 series motor actuated t case to function.

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, transmission tunnel support plate 58013-60071 (for models 2007-) is different shape than my opening (year 2001). Also, to my understanding, all of tcases in question are on the right side of the gearbox lever. Also, to my understanding, models in question are using HF2A tcase (FZJ, HDJ) and mine is HF2AV (from EU spec 80).

Apologies if I missed something.

The 70 series hdt/fz/vdj transfer case lever operates in a straight line action with a “lift” to enter 4lo. Unless you wish to introduce the h15x transfer case shifter AND the correct transfer case searching out the plate, mat/carpet, and boot are a waste of time. The 80 series transfer case will all be custom finishes. Also searching for new old stock 20 year old parts will be a trick.

I've picked the expression shifter tower on these forums ;) ... not sure if it's correct. Toyota's diagrams call them retainer it seems.

So the gearbox casing is the same, but what about bellousing, intermediate plate, etc? Saying that, my guess is that gearbox is not as problematic as transfer case, shifter position on that one is currently way off in backward direction.

Is HF2AV (from 80) same length as HF2A (at least till the shifter retainer point)?

If diagrams are correct, 7* are using bracket + linkage to relocate the tcase shifter, while on 80 there is no bracket + the shifter is bent in a way it moves it backward.

I can open the tcase and change all the parts on diagram, but is it needed? Or is it just enough to get bracket + retainer + links.

I hope someone did that swap before. Any aussies around?

Gearbox shifter seems to be inside tolerances.

I'd hope only tcase shifter, retainer and bracket can be changed to relocate he shifter? I could also change the forks if needed, but sourcing the whole tcase from AU would be prohibitively expensive. But not sure if there is a place to mount that 7* retainer + bracket for tcase lever on my gearbox casing.

This ad suugests it can be done...

One option is also to do some custom metal works on existing support plate, use 80 series boots and do a custom piece of mat, attached with velcro or someting.
