Looking at a rust free low milage (120K) 96 that is Triple Locked and has cloth interior, and a factory rear tire carrier. Unfortunately no subtank, no ambulance doors, and has a damn snorkel on it.

Questions for the experienced people here...

In doing research, I'm getting quite a bit of conflicting information, such as the 1HD-FT is or is not computer controlled?

The current owner says he cannot find an ECU, but did find an emissions control module. So that leads to another question. What does it do, and if it fails, will the engine still run normally and reliably, other than a CEL?

Was this model ever offered with a transfer case that is 2H/4H/N/4L? This one is 4H/N/4L. I've seen some Euro spec HDJ80's with an illuminated 4WD push button on the dash, but this one doesn't have that. So how many different drivetrain variations were offered from the factory for the HDJ?

FYI, this one I'm looking at is LHD from central Asia.

Thanks!

FT is a mechanical fuel pump. FTE is electronic fuel pump. I don't remember what the exact details were, but the automatics went from hydraulic to electronically controlled at some point I believe.

The emissions computer probably means yours is equipped with EGR. It can be disabled or removed.

My HDJ81 has 4H/N/4L. Some people have done part time 4WD conversions. Not sure about factory offerings.

The 1HD-FT is not a computer controlled engine, in terms of the fuel injection and timing system.

The pictured computer was only fitted to European-spec, manual transmission models, so if it has found its way to Central Asia (where exactly?) it was a used import already. Having this computer means it will have a throttle position sensor on the fuel pump. This may lead to it being mistaken for an electronically controlled pump, which it is not. And as mentioned, this means it has an EGR system which is best removed if not required by law where you live.

Thanks, and one more question...

The T-Belt indicator, when illuminated, I'm told that that is a predetermined odometer set point that tells you that the timing belt needs to be replaced, is that correct? If so, how is it reset? I always assumed it came on if the timing belt broke?

And speaking of that, I asked the seller, who also imported it about timing belt service, and he said he was going to replace it. Now the last word I got from him was "the timing belt looks fine, so I didn't replace it". Should I be concerned since there's no record of previous replacement, nor any records of BEB replacement.

Vehicle was imported from Mongolia.

The timing belt light is just a service reminder. If the belt breaks, the engine will suffer severe internal damage and be inoperative. Just replace it as part of your major service when you receive it.

BEBs were not an issue on the 1HD-FT as far as I know.

Just to let you know, there are not many paved roads in Mongolia so that vehicle may have spent much of its life on rough country tracks. Or might just have gone around the streets of the capital. In the countryside, if it went near what they describe as mechanics, it will probably have been fixed with hammers and wire.
