Hi, new 73 owner here. Just need some help decoding the stickers in the engine bay. I got the LC with no maintenance record of anything from the PO, but I see some sticker tags on the engine bay, but the problem is I can't read Japanese. Can someone help me, maybe they have the same sticker tag in English version.

This one looks like timing belt was replaced 92000 Km, I'm assuming I need to replace it every 100K, so next change is around 180K, current ODO is 135K. I did replace the AC and Alternator belt already.

This tag is on the air filter housing. Can't decode the .25mm and .45mm. What needs to be done every 50000km? The bottom part looks like oil weight and 5000 km oil change interval for 1HZ? What needs to be done every 10000 km?

Engine coolant seem to have a Long Life Coolant and from the tag it looks like the next coolant flush is at 205000 km. Is Castle LLC a special coolant they use in Japan? I checked the coolant and it is pretty clean and fresh, should I stick with the red coolant? Does Toyota have a similar red coolant that I can get from the dealer?

Also, I'm assuming his is not the factory radiator cap. The radiator and hoses looks new.

The engine bay is pretty well maintained for a 30 year old LC.

Would appreciate any help you guys could provide. I've been baselining the truck and doing something every month. My focus now is on flushing the coolant before winter.

Thanks!

Buy a manual, its all in there.
But for time being ,the .25-.50 is most likely valve adjustment( needs shims). Ive never seen a complaint about toyota red coolant and I use nothing else, but anything with the same specs should be ok. There is only 2 types of red coolant. Diluted and undiluted. The undiluted works out cheaper but you have to buy distilled water which makes it last longer.
When you do the coolant open the heater valve. I also back flush the heater with the garden hose. First time I did it, black s*** came out and the heater worked better.

I wouldnt trust the odo, the 70 series odo is easy to change and plenty of them have had it done.

5000klms is oil , but I dont think it needs to be done till 6-7000klms under light usage. The oil weights given are cold climate . Toyota Australia recommend 20-50 for the 1HZ in a warm climate. I do the oil filter at the same time but I from memory it only needs to be done every second oil change or 10000klms.
Injectors are supposed to be serviced at 100000klm intervals. Even if its not making black smoke, they can be out of adjustment if the springs need shimming
Does it have a K&N air filter? I only use the original paper filter, they have shown themselves to be superior when tested.
Gearbox, t/case and diffs are 25000-30000klms intervals. It can vary from market to market I think they take 80-90 gar oil and the LSD, if it has one, needs LSD oil.
Fuel filter I do once a year. Adding the factory pre filter is a worthwhile upgrade.
That radiator cap looks ok. It appears to be made in Japan and generally anything made in Japan is good quality. If it holds pressure, its ok.

An engine reconditoner who specialised in 1HZ told me that what kills them is usually a faulty thermostat at highway speeds when the driver doesnt notice the gauge has gone into the red. It destroys the head and sometimes the engine. Always use the OEM t/stat. It an easy job.

Giving the drivetrain and steering linkages grease makes them nicer to drive.

Driving them constantly at high speed in hilly areas can also do this, Sustained high speed shouldn't be over 120kph IMO. It also causes oil to be sucked up into the air tube.
I always poke the drain holes in all the doors, then put the garden hose in there to make sure they are flowing..

Although it doesn't work well for hand written Japanese, google translate app is your best friend for printed Japanese whether it is in your shop manual, owners manual or stickers on the car. It is about as good you can get without having a real live translator next to you.

If you ever do a timing belt job you will see that getting the new OEM belt will get you that sticker comes in both Japanese and English versions.

Buy (or download) the following shop manuals. Most likely will have to download pdf copies since the paper format is or will soon be discontinued. Sometimes people sell used versions here from time to time in classifieds. It will answer pretty much all of your questions.

RM183E for your chassis and body
RM172E for your engine

Thanks for all the help. I will try to locate the manual. I’ve been googling bits and pieces of info that i need. Most result goes back to this forum. I did change air and fuel filter and run some diesel purge on it. Switch tranny, tcase, diff fluid to synthetic. Change engine oil, accessory belts and steering linkages. Then sorted out the electronics. Switch headlights to US specs, convert and rewire the warn winch and ipf lights for 24v system. PO wired everything and tap it to low side battery. The high side started leaking probably because of over charging. I replaced both battery with marine deep cycle.

I’ll see if i can do a coolant and heater core flush before i sign off on this and store it for winter.

What is the best way to store it in winter? Just fill the tank and add anti gel? Disconnect the batteries?

Even having the PDF versions of the manual is better than nothing... there is a lot of information in there.

Curious - how much oil does your 1HZ take? My manual for my 2002 is saying oil needs to be changed every 20,000km but it takes almost 12 litres. I still plan to change it once a year or 10-12,000kms. I also drive a little Jetta TDI and its oil intervals are every 10,000 and I use it most of the time.

What year is yours, we may not be talking apples to apples here so to speak.

Service intervals from manual:

Coolant every 80,000
DENSO paper filter every 30,000
DIFFS every 40,000
No mention of transfer or trans, but I just changed mine out anyways and plan on every 80,000

Storage - yes - full, fuel conditioner/stabilizer - can disconnect batteries or have a smart controller to maintain the batteries and leave them connected up.

I have 1990, the last oil change was about 9.5 liter with 15/40 Mobil1 synthetic every 5000 km. I wonder what the difference between an old 1HZ to a later 1HZ engine. Probably you got 3 more liter of oil to play with to extend oil change interval.

its kinda hard to tell if the oil is still good on a diesel engine since the minute you turn on the engine, oil is black again.

tranny oil i used redline mt-90 synthetic. It was a bit sticky to shift when I got the truck and replaced it asap. I got used to my jeep TJ with short throw shifter and systhetic oil. it was smooth. the LC shift like a farm truck, but smoother now after switching to synthetic.

Air filter i went back to stock paper filter. the PO used K&N and I never like those filter.

Diffs, front was clean when i drained it. Rear was a little murky. Probably the PO never shift it in 4wd

Coolant was clean when I open the radiator and hoses looks new. The sticker next change is 205000 km, i got the truck at 128000. so probably it was change recently. I think it can wait till next year.

Castrol list the later 1HZ as having 11.3 inc filter, but I think that would be for a "dry" engine.
