What kind of mileage are people getting with an HZJ73? I'm looking at replacing my BJ73 with something a little newer, but a bit wary of the poor economy the 1HZ seems to get. I have driven a lot of HZJ75 and HZJ79 utes over the years and remember getting pretty poor mileage (500km/90L) but we were usually heavily loaded with gear, with heavy 16ply 7.50 tyres on split rims, etc.

13 to 13.5 litres per 100klms unladen is about normal. It doesn't vary much with weight but wind resistance or head winds can kill it. I think the worst I have ever got was about 15/100 into a strong head wind all day.
My odometer is accurate and I have been watching it for years and got the same figures from all 3 1HZ powered 7* series I have owned.
The "90 litre" tank rarely gets more than 85 litres into it unless you lift one side slightly. In any case mine was always measured from top up to top up.

Depends what you do to it. Before lift, tires, turbo, and armour I was consistently getting 700-800km to a tank in my HZJ77. Tires and lift killed mileage the most and turbo cost me 1L per 100km

I don't think you gain mileage with that motor just horsepower. There was not a big improvement in diesels in mileage until the mid 2000s. Same old 4 speed trannies auto. Cant say I would go diesel today on a new vehicle. There is often almost no difference between gas and diesel these days. 20 years ago there was 10 to 20 percent savings on diesel. How do you make that back?

Diesel fuel will always achieve better economy because the diesel molecule contains 30% more energy. The downside to diesel is they cost a fair bit more to buy ,so you need to be doing the klms to get the savings. The upside (at least in Australia) is that diesels always attract a higher resale value.

As an example, the ADR efficiency for a 2015 4WD petrol Hilux is 13.1L/100km compared to 8.3L/100km for the diesel. The petrol uses about 58% more fuel. That is a big difference. Even with diesel costs being slightly higher, the diesel is still significantly cheaper to run. The ADR figures may not indicate what you will actually use, but because the test is under controlled conditions the comparison between figures is fairly reliable.
Diesel vs Petrol

ADR = Australian Design Rules.

The difference in claimed fuel consumption with the 200 series is the same.
Claimed fuel economy (L/100km): 14.5 petrol; 10.3 diesel

Agree by the time you include service costs with twice the oil and extra filters it evens out in the long run. The diesel being sealed to water and having low down toque with dependability is a win. There happy to run overloaded all day every day carry huge fuel loads basically crossing the country. Also in Australia there very common with genuine or aftermarket spares in every major town.
Give me diesel anyday my old HDJ80 rebuilt 1HDT Saharha auto was 3 ton 13/100 hwy 17 around town. My hj75 rebuilt 12Ht overdriven 2 ton 8 to 10 hwy 12 to 14 around town or towing.

Well I get about 11L per 100km average over everything in the BJ73 with 33/10.5 ATs, but I drive like a real granny. Would love to get the same or similar from a HZJ73

HZJ73 at 11 l 100km is a little optimistic for a 1HZ cruiser . I have heard of people claiming 12 l but I was never able to achieve that but then again mine where almost always lifted with bigger tires and running at 130 kph at the European highways

It's threads like this that make me wish I had paid more attention to that "metric nonsense" back in the day. :)

A few times I have had 12.5/100 but 13.5 is the norm with 32inch tyres. But the 1HZ is a real fuel miser in low gear/low rpm on slow trails.

Below is 2 spread sheets. One from 1996 and one from 2019. Same vehicle.
injector pump was rebuilt before 2019 trip. I have done about 25000 klm since then and my fuel economy at the moment is crap. Power drop, fuel economy drop and it bogs down under heavy acceleration.any suggestions

They are both from 96.

I got 16.8l per 100km’s city. Bone stock except lift and 31’s

I found with 31 inch tyres, the speedo and odometer on my 73 series were way out.
