I hate chromo rings..

I never figured how to get them to seat in my old Bug.

I only use cast rings now..

Ive never heard of chromoly rings, you mean they have a moly top coat or are they actually chrome rings? Did you break the motor in or just drive it?

run the piss out of it on the freway .. the motor needs to got hot and running at speed, i have heard of cruiser rings needing 1500 mi befor but not 3k i would just drive it hard

never use chrome rings..................................

run the piss out of it as hard as you can..................

just make sure it's hot(fully warmed up)

You must use a non detergent oil. That is the big secret to properly seating rings to the cylinder bore. They should be all seated in by 1500 miles, 3000 miles is the high limit. Use whatever oil you like after that. I prefer Dino oils as opposed to synthetics as these old engineered engine systems aren't as tight at the new engines to validate the $$$ of the non-Dino stuff.
The detergents in the oils today do too good of a job at lubricity and prevents the breaking in of rings on engines.
If your burning oil you got a problem. If this in a re-ring job What amount of cylinder bore taper did you have??? The bricks tend to taper out rather quickly and high compression helps this process along.
If you're loosing compression, have you performed a leakdown test?
For rebuilders, I recommend & exclusively use total seal ZGS rings for rebuilds From my drag VW's engine to my 66 fj40 stocker.
Dave.
