All - I have a 2006 LC with 118k miles and want to stay on top of preventative maintenance and one of the items on my list is to replace the thermostat (I'm also planning to replace the fan clutch, which I already purchased). I've searched on the 100 forum and haven't found a step by step of how to do it.

I'd appreciate it if anyone has a write-up and could post it on this thread or if there is a prior post on MUD already that I wasn't able to find to respond with that link, it would be much appreciated!

It's pretty simple. You will want to drain the coolant (I think you can get away with half), you can reuse it if collected in a clean container. Unbolt the thermostat housing near the center top of the engine, (work it off slow if it's sticking). Put in a new gasket and thermostat, reassemble and fill with coolant.

It's also a good time to do heater T's while the coolant is down. If you want detailed technical info, tlcfaq has a FSM available.

Thanks - Already did the heater T's, both in my 100 and my 80. Being that I've never replaced the thermostat, I was hoping there would be a good step by step write-up, complete with pics. For example, not sure where the thermostat housing is (sorry, not real engine savy....) but sure I can figure it out.

I pretty sure I did a complete write up on that in my build thread. I had a over heating issue that was caused by a stuck thermostat. On my phone so I can't tell you what page.

Thermostat housing is the roundish thing the upper radiator hose connects to. Thermostat is underneath the housing.

The BEST money you can spend is on a factory shop manual (FSM). You'll be paid back the first time you do your own work.

You can download one via links in the FAQ section. Though it's not specifically for your model year, engine stuff will be the same.

How sure are you that this wasn't done with the 90k service?

Very sure it wasn't done at the 90k. I have a write up of all work that was done. I bought the Cruiser at 100k miles and the gal didn't have the 90k done. The shop I used did flush the system and replace fluids however at that time didn't think to have the thermostat changed out, but will do it myself this time.

Thanks Steve - That helps and agree about the FSM. I have a pdf of it for my 80 and need the same for the 100.
