I see that many people do the timing belt leaving the radiator on the truck. How do you get the shroud and fan out doing this? From the top or bottom? Seems like there are still hoses blocking the way. All of the plastic parts on my 1999 seem very brittle at this point, don't want to break anything!

I was able to pull the fan and the shroud up in one motion. Good insurance: Cut a piece of cardboard the size of the radiator to protect the fins for this job.

It seems like these two lines in ppressle's picture are blocking the way. Do you disconnect these as well and just push them aside? Do you have to flex the shroud any?

No pics. IIRC you just remove the upper radiator hose, which you have to do anyway, really, apart of the timing belt PM as you want to take a good look at the water pump anyway (often this has been found to be the PM R&R time for the water pump too)...I don't remember having to horse the fan and shroud to get them out.

Here is another try on the picture, again thanks to ppressle. I made a false start attempt on the timing belt last night, but just couldn't seeem to get around these two lines no matter how I twisted or turned the shroud. It's mainly the metal rigid line holding me up. It's probably like one of those twisty metal ring puzzles...painfully obvious once you see how it goes.

I was able to rotate into this position (see photo) & push it back/around stuff on front of engine and get fan out. Then worked shroud out.
Bottom rad hose was off and I have ext ATF cooler so no ATF lines in way at bottom of rad.

I know it's an old post, but still may help someone else. Looks like you only removed the fan shroud's bolts and not the bracket bolts next to them (i.e. the bracket that holds the a/c discharge tube and wire to the radiator), but if you remove those bolts as well you will have more room to get the fan and shroud out(move the tube and wire closer to the radiator). Personally, I was able to get the fan out first and then the shroud (it required a little wrestling).

It's been a couple of years since I've done the job and I had forgotten my trick. Doing 90k this weekend and after some trial and error I figured it out again:
  • Remove Serp Belt
  • Remove the t-stat housing. This creates room to snake the fan out with the blue flange coming through where the t-stat studs were.
  • Remove the fan.
  • Remove Oil Filter. Might not be required for stock filter, but the M1-209 sticks out into needed space.
  • Remove center bracket supporting trans cooler line. This allows the DS cooler line to droop substantially.
  • Lower the shroud on the DS while bringing up the PS. In other words, rotate it clockwise when viewed from the front.
  • There's sufficient room without much force required at all to pull it up and out diagonally toward the PS.
