I'll post pics later, but I just brought home my "new" Canadian M101. It's very solid with only some surface rust which is mostly underneath. I think I got a good deal at $950. I have lots of mods planned, but first I have an issue. It was recently decommissioned from the Canadian military and brought into the US by a local construction company. They bought a 3 or 4 for their use, but decided to sell this one. The problem is it has never been titled in the US. Any ideas how to get this done? The local DMV gave me about 20 things I need to do...provide a copy of the foreign title/registration, copy of bill of sale used to bring into US, VIN verification by State Patrol, certified weight slip, US Custom entry form, etc...This sounds like it could be painful?

Im in the same boat as you, i brought mine back from canada and all i have is a bill of sale. i talked to several places and basically you have to fill out a form the dmv has that requests a back ground of the trailer basically with show that the trailer has never been titled or registered here in the states. with this you take the trailer to the dmv to be inspected they will then issue the registration however you will not get a title and wont be able to get a title for 3 years. after three years you should be able to request a title and they will give you one. I cant say this is correct for the state of colorado but thats what i have found out here in washington. I filled out the form but i will try and just call them this week as i dont know how on earth they will know what there looking for when all they ask for is a serial number (trailer has 4 numbers for the serial number thats it) If you find anything else out please let me know as i have a place in colorado, and arizona and would prefer to do this the easiest way possible

I'll be talking with the guy I bought it from later this week. He wants this too work as well as he knows there is a market for these trailers and he has a connection to get them. I hope like hell I don't have too wait 3 years to use the trailer? If anyone has gone through this process successfully, please speak up!!!

you will be able to use the trailer during those 3 years it will be registered you just wont have a title for 3 years.

What is the process for registering a home-made/custom trailer in Colorado? After you're done with the mods, who can say it's a Canadian M101? ;)

i agree with that statement and i beleive it would be the easiest route for a title.

people make homenade trailers all the time sometimes out of half a truck and title them as trailers.

My thoughts exactly! I think it may be far easier to go this routse after speaking with the woman at the DMV yesterday. She made me feel like a freaking terrorist!...where did you get this, why, what are you going to doing with it, blah, blah...

I had the same issue several months ago in NM. I had to provide the bill of sale, and a VIN verification. I had to pay a gentleman to come assess the trailer and provide the proper info to the state. The DMV gave me his information, CO should be able to do the same thing. He also did the wieght verification. As for the prior title, by stating that the vehicle was last owned by a government organization (Specifically CDN), that requirement was waived. They initially asked for the customs entry form, but after several conversations, they decided they didn't need it. I'll take a look at my title this evening and see if they listed it as a home-made.

Keep in mind, I have invested many hours in line at the DMV. Best situation is to talk to the same person each time.

Good Luck!

Sorry to jump off topic, but did you find a source for these here in NM, or did you get it shipped to you?

If you can't find one, the guy I bought mine from may have 3-6 more soon.

I initiated my buy while I was in Ohio. I got it from Michele with militarytires.com (VERY PAINFUL). Finally took one that she had already shipped to Pheonix. When I was dealing with her, she still had a few in Texas and Pheonix. Might be worth a call. Cost was $950. If you ask her to ship you one, expect her to ship two, and it will take six months.

Thanks Pint/Jenaff...

The shipping, and dealing with something out of state for inspection is a good thing, as it is keeping me from making an impulse buy. But had I found one locally.. the temptation would have been to hard to resist.

At this point, I want one, but don't need one, so I am thinking of going the way of "Rezarf's" build. It looks like a lot of fun, and I think the satisfaction of building from scratch would be more pleasing than owning one.

At this point, I am either going to be camping with the family, which, my wife wants something with more comfort in mind (small travel trailer), or I am going up with a group of two, which I can put everything in the back of the truck.

I am looking for this more for the future when the kids are bigger, and I finally wear down the wife, as well as for hunting. I am hoping to go hunting for elk this fall, and don't want the carcus in the back of the 100.

I bought mine of course no title just bill of sale, took to the DMV and got it registered, no title, but dont really need that, just need to register so can take on road with license plate.

can you explain how you did this? just walk in with a serial number or what?

thanks

Yep, was a piece of cake, again it came with no title so I recieved no title. Just register with bill of sale, get ur tag with proof of insurance for my state and off I went. There was no inspection of the trailer, I believe the weight and size had a big impact, told them it was under 750 lbs or something like that, so was not a big deal. I gave them the serial number and model and bingo

as far as getting a home built title they require all material receipts

Not in MD, VA or TX.

I registered my M416 as a homemade in MD a decade ago, never had any issues, didn't even have to show the trailer.

Same experience here, I walked into my DMV, and they nearly gave me the title, registration, and tag... it was so easy it was scary. No receipts no inspection, under the section for describing the "method of construction" the DMV lady said ,"Just write down, 'parts on hand.'" I did, and she processed all my junk!

It acutally scared me when I think now what COULD be traveling down the highway. It was a no brainer, I just went in to get some info, walked out with the thing titled, tagged, and registered for about 40 bucks. :D

Go for it, pray for a nice worker, be nice yourself, and hope for the best! ;)
