Any details on the rear badge aand a how to?
I've had a few direct questions about the letters in the back. My original plan was to remove the badge and find a way to paint around the letters, but from everything that I've read and after trying floss, I decided to not risk the paint and the mess of trying to prep for reapplication.
The toughest part of this project was to find a way to mask the letters well as there are grooves and curves to the letters. What I found helpful was the use of narrow auto masking tape which stick well and allowed me to fill the grooves with the push of a pick tool. I also used a pencil knife to remove excess tape around the letters. Be careful. I scratched my paint a little with the pick tool and had to touch up when removing the tape. Masked around the badge well, including reverse camera, prior to painting. Leave access to top and bottom edge of emblem to paint more thoroughly.
Sanded chrome some. Degreaser. Adhesion promoter, 2X primer, factory code paint, and clearcoat. No sanding between coats. Prayed for the best. I think the work was worth it. The fresh paint was inevitably a little darker than the rest of the 12 year old car, but I love walking up to the truck and seeing the letters pop like newer cars. Have fun.
