Good day
I have a 76 and a 77 40 series and am building one out of the two. How do I identify them? They both look the same.
Google has failed me on helping me lots on Dana’s but nothing on Toyota.
Thanks for the help.

Between those two years, absolutely nothing changed. If you HAVE to know which is which, you can pull the diff cover and look at the date code stamped on the outside of the ring gear. I suppose with modern technology, you could even use one of those spark plug cameras thru the oil fill hole in the axle. Hmmm

So what would I say to when orderign gears and lockers. I have a toyota ???? Diff front a toyota ???? rear

You can say 76 or 77; it won't matter. If you study vendor charts, you will see that R&P and bolt patterns all changed in 74, so there's no chance you'll have parts that won't work if you're working with a 76 or 77. ALL the replacement parts are designed to work with the 74 and newer design.

Thank You.
But what is the official name for the diff.
Ie my jeep had Dana 44s my old truck had Dana 60s. I am new to the older Toyota stuff so please educate me on this.

What I have found is it could be called a 10 bolt or 12 bolt is this correct? if so do I open them up and count bolts?

Thank You

Didn't the axle shafts themselves change from press on bearing surfaces to machined, in 9/76?

not just toyota. FJ40 or land cruiser diffs from the year range. In 79 they changed the gear ratio. The front and the back diffs are swappable.
