So I want to replace the stock gearing that is currently in my US spec FZJ80 with the 3:73 gears that are offered in Europe.

I have a manual H151 5 speed behind a 1HDFT.

I have some friends in England scouring the junk yards and classifieds for a set of 3:73 gears ..... Thing is I don't know how to identify if the trucks their looking at have that particular gear set without removing the gears and counting the teeth.

Is it stamped anywhere on the truck?
Do all the 5 speeds come with 3:73's?

Thanks

There should be an axle code on the data plate/sticker. Search around the interwebs, there is some info to decipher the codes for the gear ratio.

edit:

Look for a K304. I have a K085 on my troopie, which is proken down like so:

K = 9.5"
08 = 4.11
5 = 4 pinion with LSD

You'd want a the K 304, broken down as such:

K = 9.5"
30 = 3.73
4 = 4 pinion

If the last digit is 4 it's not only 4 pinion.. but it's also Locked.

If you track down a supply in Europe let me know, I'd love a set of K304 diffs (3.73 e locker) for my 80

Spin the pinion 3.73 times and see how far the crown (or hubs if still attached) turn.

The salt on the UK roads makes it pretty hard to ID anything by a data tag. I imported an engine and gearbox earlier in the year, the corrosion is terrible.

Great info guys thanks. I'll post up on this thread if i come across a honey hole!

You guys can always find a brand new set if you know who to ask:hillbilly:

Damn, those are great prices (compared to other options). What comes in the kit? Ring/Pinion and what else?

I wonder why the rear kit is more than the front? You would think the front would be priced more due to the hi-pinion design.

Price difference between front and rear is because of the size and weight.

Front: 12.45LB
Rear: 16.75LB

Thanks for doing this Akella!

Since I'm planning to use gears from a 60 series third member for the rear to keep cost down, will I need any additional items?

PM sent! Thanks!
