I have a 1984 FJ60. The powersteering pump is leaking badly. Should I replace with stock? A local parts store had one in stock a month or so ago. I think it was around $180 plus hoses. I have heard about guys using Volvo 240 pumps and others using GM style...what should I do??? Where should I get the parts. Thanks Craig

Just go stock. Even OEM. It worked fine for years, it'll work fine for 12+ more years.

The OEM pump is going to last longest. $180 is an awesome price. It should say Toyoda on the cap (yes - Toyoda). Usually these go for $400+. Leaking PS pumps will kill the Airpump...

go with brand new.

get it from cruiser dan. there's an ad for american toyota, call and talk to him.
best price/service, etc.

it's a bit of a pain to take off so best if you only have to do it once.:)
pretty sure the one for 180 would be aftermarket rebuild.
I just bought a new one for my 87 and it was around $300

I concur with thorvald. Get the OEM one. I went through 4 of the rebuilt ones from NAPA over the summer. Every one of them leaked. I've had no problems with my OEM one.

I sent mine off to PS Systems in Fla.

So far so good, but I have only been running it for a week.

Rebuild was ~$100, 1 year warranty...

I used PS systems in FL also. Leaked after about 18 mos, made the air pump sieze. Bought an OEM pump from CDan.

Hopefully you'll have better luck!

Most definitely go with an OEM pump, that is, unless you plan on selling your rig anytime soon. I plan on keeping my 60 for as long as I can.

That's funny, I hadn't noticed that before.

I got a new one from cdan, about $310 total. Just waitin' for a day off to do the install!:bounce:

cap gasket?

Sorry to hijack but this is related. Does anyone know if I can get just the cap gasket somewhere?? My pump isn't leaking but the cap gasket IS leaking and I've already flipped it. Any suggestions??

Good Question! Did you ask your local yota parts dept.?

Napa parts dealer?

Before you pop for the new pump, check to make sure that it is the pump that is leaking. It could be the reservoir 'O' ring seal, could be a gasket on the pump that is replaceable, could be from the hose fitting seal.

These are easier and cheaper to fix. I would agree that OEM parts are the way to go if it really needs to be replaced. After that you should be good to go for another 1/4 million miles.

Just buy a new cap, I bought one from Specter a few years ago...maybe C-Dan can get it.

FYI on removing the PS pump: There's a bolt on the back that's a PITA to remove due to the length. My mechanice said if you shave down the head of the bolt you will have a much easier time putting it back in and taking it off (if there are future problems). It's a trick he learned back in the day when he worked for a dealership.

I ditched my OEM setup last summer, and other than the PITA of making my own smog pump tensioner AND the MAF bracket $$, it's been worth it. The cost of the OEM pump (only real option) was out of my reach. That said, I saved maybe 100 bucks over cdan's price, and I have an oddball belt. HTH...
