I know there are PLENTY of posts on the Pesky Heater hose, but thought I'd document my experience, and help anyone who's worried about doing the task.

First off, its not as bad as most people make it. I think if I were to do it again, it would take me no more then an hour or 2. (As long as I was having a lucky day :hillbilly:)

Tools:

  • 3/8" Drive Ratchet and 12mm socket
  • 1/4" Drive Ratchet and 12mm socket
  • Dremel with Flex-Shaft attachment and cut off wheel

  1. Drain coolant from block
  2. Remove ATF Dipstick and tube
  3. Zip tie random hoses out of the way to frame rail for extra room
  4. Remove upper mount for hard line (Next to EGR Valve)
  5. Remove the PIA, invisible lower mount using a 1/4" Drive Ratchet and 12mm socket. I have the Gear Wrenches and the OD of the wrench wouldn't fit correctly. The standard 12mm socket fit perfectly and came off in 5 minutes.
  6. Using the Dremel and extension, zip off the old hose clamps, and be careful not to go too deep to hit the actual hard lines. I went ahead and just cut the hose lengthwise. This made it easy to pull off
  7. Lube up your new hose with something light. I just used some Vaseline. Slide on to loose hard line, put on your clamps, and slide onto the block nipple.
  8. Took a little bit of patience to get the lower mount bolt back in, but eventually got it.
  9. Ice your fingers by drinking a cold refreshment!

I used a Dremel too. It was pretty easy and fast to get the old PHH off. But I forgot to put lube on the new one. I struggled a lot to push the new (silicone) one on. Took probably close to an hour but felt like forever. So lube aplenty!

In a garage or work space with proper tools sure. It's still a bit of a PHH... PESKY Heater Hose, not PITAHH.... pain the in the a** heater hose. ;)

What is the PIA? What type of hose clamps did you use?

Sent from my SPH-L710 using IH8MUD

Did you replace that small rubber hose that goes from that hardline you mentioned to the engine block on the bottom of the engine ? In my own opinion that is the hardest part, mainly due to angle and lack of room. Was just courious. :hhmm:

I aready purchased the special constant pressure heavy duty clamps and gates premium 5/8" heater/coolant hose from NAPA. gonna do this in the spring. I am going a-wall on this , by completely removing the heater core and rear coil core, by removing everything and running that 5/8 " heater hose from the bottom of the engine block , directly into the thermostat return line. Truck is not used in the winter. Saving me some time, money $$$ saved for the heater control valve ---Guessing $100 or so?---- and gaining some extra space in that busy area around the egr and vacuum modulator valve. That is my 2 cents, on how I am handling this issue. While waiting for better temperatures, i am going back and forth on rather going under the rig and replacing that 3 or 4 inch hose on the engine block. Looks in need of replacement, but not sure if i can get my hands in there without starting to remove everything, and causing other issues. I replaced a lot of my emission devices and injectors, etc. My work came out very nice and no issues, sometimes to much work in one area causes things to go crazy, hopefully not pushing my luck.....lol

I recently did a lot of engine work, had the intake manifold off, would have been a lot more easy if I did it then. Just was not paying attention, i thought that was hardlined like the EGR line, I guessed wrong. Seems it was done for engine vibration , and act as a flexing isolator for movment.

Guess this is what makes it fun,,,lol

Don't know if this will help anyone but when I was doing the turbo bypass valve on my VW and couldn't get the hoses back on, I tried some oil or grease (can't remember which) and it still wouldn't go. So I cleaned that off and tried some CRC spray silicone and it slipped right on.
It's the same type of hose too.

I just used some Vaseline.
... vaseline will rot some rubber. Silicon spray or silicon grease intended for rubber is a better choice when using a rubber hose. Dishwashing soap also works ok.

What is the PIA? Anyone have a photo?

The PIA is the pain you will feel in your a...

If you want a photo you will need a camera and a mirror and will need to bend over with your a... facing the mirror to take the said photo :)

I personally don't have a photo from when I did my PHH :)

cheers,
george.

Just thinking out loud. I changed mine a couple months back, along with several other hoses. As I recall the hose at the top of the hard line has a 90deg bend in it. Could you take one of those, cut the hard line above the bend in the hard line, and use that hose and cut to fit?

Seems like it would be a simple solution, so to speak...

Did you access from top and bottom only, or did you remove driver front wheel and skirting?

it helps to take pair of pliers stick in end of hose and strech out, don't go he-man and rip hose, another helpful thing, heat hose in hot water .

Still trying to get to know each other stage...

Here's a dumb question...

Is this the PHH?

Since i've been on the MUD I saw this topic getting beaten to death, that tells me it's a must to change. I'm still in the stage of getting to know every bit of her and how to deal with her and all that stuff so I want to make sure i'm looking at the right hose.

The PO was the original owner and had this PHH replaced in 2004 and he had religiously kept up with the maintenance part on time.

I know the hose is on the driver side so i took these pics...

First pic is the farther view and the second one is a closer look...

Reference your first picture ... if you follow that metal pipe that is attached to the hose, with the white paint mark on it, to its end ... and it will snake down behind the block ...where it reappears at its end there is a "small hose" that connects that pipe to a nipple on the side of the block .. that "small hose" going to the nipple on the block is the "PHH"

Pilotuki....
AJP has you answered up well but that there hose too can blow , dump your coolant in 30 seconds and put super bowl sunday plans at risk :D
It is not the Firewall Heater Hose FHH sold by 1fzfe.com either but right below the heater valve leading to your rear heater hard lines. If your renewing and replacing hoses as PM it is one id do as well so you dont spend sunday walking to autozone and wrenching on the side of the road. Or if you dont need rear heat, bypass it all together.

here is good pic

It's a good thing MUD is here. Otherwise I would have identified the wrong hose. Although you mentioned this hose could blow up to, then it shall be changed... Thank you all...

I think i see the PHH but I have to take the driver side front wheel to get into it...

I will be busy this weekend then... :D

was told mine had been done, but looking at it ,makes me wonder, thinking of removing brake booster and master cylinder for room, anyone did this?

Great info... although mine was changed by the PO back in 2004, I still want to be safe because I plan on keeping her until I couldn't drive anymore... :D
