Thinking specifically of exterior trim--around lights, etc. Any way to do this that looks good and lasts?

I used Plastidip. I peel it off or goo-gone it off when and if it chips. Honestly doesn't chip and flake like spray paint, so I prefer it. Its easy to spray on and can go back to chrome whenever I want. The only hard part is cleaning the grill if I decide to remove it.

Followed @Box Rocket 's advice doing this and have been pretty happy. Works just fine.

I did this back in April 2014 and just refreshed it last weekend with better matte black paint. The plastic chrome is a beast and Toyota did a great job of putting it on. I sanded it previously with 400 grit (I think) to promote adhesion and then sprayed it with matte black paint. I was sloppy and figured it wouldn't last very long but it did well over the years and I had only very small spots where the paint chipped off.

For the second time, I used a maroon scotch brite pad to give the original matte black some tooth and smooth any imperfections. The old black was more of a dark gray from fading. I followed that with a good cleaning in the sink and then finally Rustoleum Professional flat black available at Home Depot. I use the same flat black for my sliders and rear bumper and buy 6 cans at a time. It's really easy to touch up, blends well, and is available everywhere. The paint goes on really smooth when the can is shaken and heated with a heat gun for several minutes before spraying.

Plasti-dip works great. I blacked out the logos, headlights, and front grill on my old Tundra with it. Held up great for 5 years until I sold the rig.

I sprayed mine and it didnt hold up. Was able to clean up the headlight trim but mangled the grill so much trying to clean it up just got a new one. Probably too much aggregate and salts on the road in winter up here.

spray paint. Krylon I think. If I was going to redo it probably use an enamel then top coat it with 2k clear for some more durability. Just made such a mess cleaning it off that the grill was done.

You can try Trim and Bumper black paint. I used it on my pocket flares and chrome grill/headlights. Just made sure to clean well and tried to scuff the grill a bit. Been through the car wash with it and didn't lose any. It's not perfect as some of the chrome on the grill was bubbled and i didn't really do much to it, but for about 20 bucks in paint I can't complain. Looks good to me. I think I used Rustoleum.

John Deer black paint used to be pretty popular here on 'mud at one point in time as well.
