Is it necessary to remove the shift console to adjust the tranny shift lever or is it all done under the vehicle? Thanks in advance! Larry

What year/model 80 series do you have and what's wrong with your shifter?

There's really nothing to adjust under the shifter console, the shift detents or steps are cut into a solid sheet of metal. Unless the bar that runs down from under the shifter assembly to the side of the transmission got bent there is nothing much to adjust under the vehicle either, IIRC. If however the shifter assembly shaft bushings, or the rubber cushions/grommets and bronze bushings on the shift connector bar (that runs down to the transmission) are worn out you could get some slop in the shifter, IME.

I just did a body lift and had to adjust mine. I just put it in park, loosened the nut on the shift rod (attached to the transmission) and tightened it back up after the detent popped back into place. You may want to check the alignment in drive or other gears too, just to be sure. After years of use and sagging engine and body mounts it wouldn't surprise me if some trucks were off a little bit.

I noticed mine can have a tough time staying in first gear. I sometimes have to hold the lever back and it'll stay in place for a while. Hopefully this is adjustable so I can get it dialed in.

The rest of the gears go into place normally.
