Just finishing up the knuckle rebuild and am screwing with the wheel bearings and preload!

How stiff is everyone elses hub after all new seals and bearings and grease. My fish thingy says 17lbs is it lying to me.

I have never done preload like this on any other vehicle i've worked on is it really nessasary. Seems like a load of crap maybe the sst would help?

17 is probably fine. Sounds like you have it pretty much together during this measurement? The knuckle measurement should be done with only the knuckle on and no TRE attached. See FA-26 in the FSM.

Another thing you shoudl do once it is all together is put a wheel on and check up down side to side for play there should be none. If all is well drive it for a week or so then check again. Also after driving check to see if hub is warm or hot that would be an indication you have it too tight.

I think you are talking about the rotational preload for the wheel bearings. Not the knuckle movement.

my preload was 21 because I did it in minus 10. make sure your go five times rotation one way and five the other way to get the grease moving.

did you use a torque wrench to set the big nut preload? A good tip when doing the lock washer I was told, when it comes time for the outer nut and the lock washer. Install the washer, then the nut, but do not torque the nut yet. First bend one tab over. Then torque the outer nut. If you don't bend a tab first the little nub in the center could shear off and later going down the road both nuts could loosen and the wheel will be held on with the brake caliper.

check out the instructions in the tech section. I used them. Only thing I experienced at the end my preload on my fish scale was way higher then the limits they say. But like I said it was cold.

every grease will give a different number, plus I would not say a fish scale is a calibrated true instument. If you are thinking it is a be all and end all or the job isn't done right then I would suggest reconsidering. Its just a crappy ole spring scale. go with a good preload on a torque wrench.

If you don't know what I mean about the lock nut I can reclarifiy.

Oh ya and this is just My two cents.

Thanks brown bear i was just looking for some #'s that are close to mine. I did as you said with the lock washer thanks for the advice. The whole job was done cleanly and with a torque wrench so all should be good. The #'s in the fsm just seem impossible thats all.

I think i'll put the fish scale in the tackle box where it belongs

Oh.. I didn't realize you were talking about when tighening the hub bearings. I usually tighten to proper torque turn it back and forth a few revolutions back off and put on the rest. I never measure the rotor with scale.
