81 BJ42 24v- swapped the original 3B back in to replace e blown 13B. Trying to determine what is factory 3B wiring/parts and which is left over from PO 13B that is not longer needed. Anyone know what this box and wiring is and if it goes with the 3B or is left over from 13B? Attached full engine photo as well for perspective.

Can you trace where the wires are going? based on the look of some heavy gauge wires routing to the thing my uneducated guess is a solenoid for the glow system

Yes. Wire going to the battery and others I believe did go to the glow system on the 13B that was previously in there. What I need to know is whether or not this relay/box is stock to the 3B and what it is called? That way I know what belongs to the 3B glow system as I try to reconnect it. If anyone has a 3B that can snap a photo of that part of the firewall that would help me. Also, I am told the 81 BJ42 is kind of unique when comparing to other years.

The 3B is an indirect injection diesel and really needs glow plugs to start. The relays are mounted to the bulkhead of the original vehicle. Therefore, they are likely to original to the 3B engine.

The 13B is a direct injection engine with no glow plugs. It has a glow screen intake heater, but being direct injection, the engine will happily start without these unless it is well below freezing. Therefore, many people don't bother connecting the glow screens when doing direct injection engine swaps.

Unless the relays are obviously user installed (generic parts screwed on with self-tapping screws etc), you can be pretty sure that they are original to the vehicle, and therefore the 3B. Why not wipe some of the dirt off them and see if they are original Denso relays?

Thanks.

If they turn out to be aftermarket, then you'll probably have a corresponding 'Wilson switch' on the dashboard somewhere to actuate it.
Chances are that this is the easiest way to get your glow system working, so I'd leave it where it is anyway for now
