Hello to all. I have been on the forum for a while - great info. Thank you to all.

I have a question. I am going to Burning Man tomorrow and I am taking my 99 L/C. It is stock all the way around, with 285 Dueler A/T Revo's. I need to carry a lot of water, which weighs a little more than 8 lbs. per gallon and I am wondering how much weight I should carry in this truck. I am driving from San Jose, up I-80 - which means steep grades at highway speeds.

Anyone have any input?

Thanks,

Gaylon

'99 100 - his
'00 100 - hers
'85 60 - the big blue beater...

Fill up with water as close to BM as possible ;) The OM states 1,300lbs is the max load carrying capacity including occupents...minus the third seats. I would think if you have stiff springs, etc. (ala OME) you could go above this...the question is how much.

Do you know anywhere close to fill up? I have been 5 times and have not seen a good place to fill.

Gerlach would be the last outpost...but it surely will be crowded up too. Probably Reno. We live about 15-miles south of I-80 in SW Reno...you're welcome to fill up here if it helps you.

Have you ever been to BM? If not look for my Avatar in Empire (about 5-miles South of Gerlach)...

I have been there several times. I think I have seen your Avatar. I will look for it.

Anyone have any experience overlaoding the cruiser?

Gaylon, ballpark how much "alot" is for us. 50 gallons is "alot" to me. 100 gallons is a helluva lot but still would be do-able.

I don't know but please post some pics of the event or at least a good link.

Don't know about weight but I've carried in my UZJ-100 3 sacks of rice, 60kg of pork in a cooler with ice, 265L of fuel, and four guys with all their gear inside and on the roof. And some tools too. Made it cross-country just fine with the brakes. It gets kinda slow in acceleration though.

Was this some sort of endurance race where at the end you had to feed 400 people with pork fried rice? Give some context to someone born on that island but with no real memories.

1650 lbs is the payload for a 100. I would make sure the bed is reinforced with a piece of plywood if you are reaching that level.

Good feedback and questions.

Basically, 100 gallons of water, 350 cans of beer, 10 gallons of liquor, no fuel, me, and camping stuff... oh and a little food. Basically no clothing :)

If the tires swell, can I inflate them more, or is max pressure max pressure?

Gaylon

water - 100 gallons x8lbs = 800 lbs
beer - 350 x 12 ounces = 4200 ounces /128 ounces per gallon = 32.8 gallons x 8lbs = 262lbs plus metal @300 lbs
1100 lbs so far.
25 gallons of gas (stock tank) = 200lbs
10 gallons of liquor x 8lbs = 80 lbs
Total = 1380 lbs

You should be ok, you still have about 300 lbs to work with.

Any feedback on adding air to the tires as they swell? 285's on 16" rims have a lot of sidewall and I expected them to flex a good bit.

I was at 6600 lbs last trip which is aboub GVW IIRC.
No handling or braking issue noted.
Check the tires rating and inflate to max.

Nice work, especially on the beer! :D

BTW Gaylon if you are carrying 10 gallons of liquor I don't think I would say I wasn't hauling any fuel! :flipoff2:

:D Naah, just me and my cousins were done raiding the house/farm of my dad, then headed back to Metro Manila. It's free food for us!

Max Sidewall pressure is the max. Do not exceed it. If you have LT tires they will have way more load capacity than you will need. Unless you exceed the GVW I don't see any need to raise the pressure.(If you go to max pressure but it is not needed to carry the weight then you have just placed additional stress on the rest of the suspension and made the truck harder to handle.) Do not add air by "eyeballing" the sidewall. Use a decent gauge and measure the actual pressure.

If you go over GVW. Use the tire load table to figure out how much pressure you need.

Bridgestone LT tire load tables

Very simple calculation - New GVW / 4 = Load per tire
Inflate to that load level with maybe a little more in case the rears are taking more than half the total load. (keep all four at the same pressure just make sure the rears are at least at the rated level they need to be. )
