I am looking for an idea of how much power a 1979 toyota mini-truck axle can take. Ideas? I am running a moderately built 400 small block and am worried I will blow up the rear end at first throttle crack. Ideas for affordable axle upgrades would be great too.

Thanks.

I'd look at getting V6/Turbo diffs for the front and rear. And get them set up by someone who know's what they are doing. There are plenty of toyota axles out there that are running big power, and it's fine as long as you don'y hammer on it....

With that much power, you should consider a Dana 60. Toy minis do not hold up well to V8 power expecially with tires 35's and up.

Or a built up D44 at least.
But you could try the stock Toy axle first and see how it goes, even put some stronger shafts in it.

....Tires? wheeling style? im assuming your locked. What is your tcase setup? auto or manual? how healthy is the 400? 100hp or 500hp?

Heres another shot. It is a 9" center, i cut flanges out of 1" plate with ears to mount the Toyota calipers and spindles. I had axles made by Strange Engineering, 31 spline Ford on one end and 30 spline Toyota on the other.
