I guess everyone knows that I am looking for a nice 2000 model LC but all this talk about lockers has got me interested. I am thinking about getting lockers for the front and rear of the new LC and wonder how much I should expect to spend. Do I really need the front locker since it will have TRAC. Inquiring minds want to know.

$1400-ish for the ARB, a pair
$200 for the comp
$500-800 for the install (just depends)

I would do the rear 1st and see if you want the front.

What are your plans? If it's steep climbs and rocks, they will be a great plus. With mud and snow, chains or these may be as effective (or at least close).

How long are you planning on keeping your cruiser? I think you need to keep it a long time to justify the expense.

I plan to keep the truck at least ten years and I will use it to go to construction sites and to check on tree farms that our family owns. I doubt I will ever be used for rock crawling or anything that brutal. But it will see its share of mud on the tree farm.

I was recently quoted $3500 for everything including compressor, front rear arbs, and installation. I considered it but figured I wouldn't keep my rig long enough to justify that expense. Next time I'll get a locked rig.

I would get some mud terrain (MT) tires first and see how it does with the traction control. If you have any issues, then you can add the rear ARB. Can't see you needing a front one ever.

I took my Tacoma almost everwhere with a rear locker only.

only minor experience limited to a bit of mud and sand with street tires, but that plus what I read here leads me to believe that with good mud tires and Trac Con you should be able to go just about everywhere that a locker would allow. Try it first without.

I paid $1300 for the lockers, $200 for the compressor, and $600 for install. The ARB switches mount VERY nicely into the 3 knockouts left of the steering wheel. Illuminated, hmmm, sweet.

The ONLY time I use my lockers on my 2000 is when I'm going through a rocky obstacle or climbing a very steep and very loose hill. Yes, there have been MANY places where I've locked my front too, though I run some pretty wild trails in this truck. Everywhere else though the TRAC is extremely effective.

One last thought.......even thought the TRAC is VERY effective in the rough stuff and in most cases is all that is needed, I can tell you that using the rear locker has put much less edge wear on my tires because they rarely spin.

I'd also recommend doing both lockers. If you're gonna do it, do it and be done. That'll keep you from "wishing you had" down the road.

I think a locker in the front and rear is exactly the way to go.

Those suggesting only a rear locker, different tires (which definitely help) or wait and see...are likely basing those opinions on conditions where there is some amount of traction to be had. Crawling around on rocks, loose dirt, etc.. where you just temporarily loose traction is one thing. MUD ( I mean real mud) is a whole 'nother cat and you want ALL wheels pulling ALL the time.

So..if those 'tree farms' have any serious mud, then lock up front and rear. If it's just 'puddles' here and there..then yeah, you have options.

I'll second what @flintknapper said: The times that I have had to use my lockers I needed front and rear. This goes for both rocks and mud. ATRAC is great, but it still isn't in the same ballpark as having true lockers.
