A guy I know has a modertally built 350 in his toyota and has 4:10
gears in it now and he wants more bite off the line and was thinking
about going to 4:38's but does not know if they will hold up as good
as the 4:10 . What is your guys opion? should he change or not?
or can he go lower4:88,5:29 or 5:71?

What size tyre does he run?
how many hwy miles does he do?

he can go as low as he wants- he'll just burn more gas and go slower on the highway working the engine harder.

Tell him to hop on a RPM/MPH calc online (there is a link in tech) and punch in some numbers and see what kind of RPM's he wants to be doing at highway speeds.

What year rig, what size tires?

Generally speaking, a good set of gears should hold up fine assuming they are broken in first. I would think he could run up to 4.56s without any trouble, 4.88s would probably be safe too. Anything lower than that might be iffy if he's got a real heavy foot.

He is running 36x12.5 15 TSL's it is not a dalily driver but he plans
on running it in mud races ? :)

i'm not sure how mud racing works. i'm possitve slow(low gears) is not the answer big block bored out and seal every nook and granny. speed and get through it without breaking i think is the key. but what do i know i love rocks. good luck
