So how are you treating all the hardware? I mean hood bolts, door hinge bolts, etc....
Are you painting them, too or leaving them unfinished?

Man...this has been one of the best threads to lurk, no doubt! Thanks for the inspiration! GREAT JOB!

More assembly

All the bolts are new stainless steel a combination of button head allen for the doors and all the visable parts, and hex for the fender bolts and places where they are not really seen. I am leaving all the bolts natural stainless for the high bling factor :D

Almost There

Here we are on Thursday night almost there ;)

thread chasing after paint and herculiner is a real pain, but it needs to be done. The top was real difficult to get lined back up but, with Kristina's help, we were able to tag team the new bolts into place. With new rubber gaskets and new rubber door molding it made for a very tight fit and assembly. We think we have most of top together with just a small bit of adjustments left.

This LC will be ready to roll by the end of Firday night and will test dirve to see if it has any mechanical bugs

Desertdude,

Excellent thread, great write-up, pics, the whole enchilada. IF things work out, I will be attempting a similar venture and I appreciate your sharing as it will help me with my project.

Cruiser looks great... give us an outdoor shot of it completed!

Man that is really looking sweet i wish i had the time money and space to do a full resto like that.

Last day count down

Thanks for the words of encouragement!
Today is the last day I have to finish. Last night before quitting we made a list. As it turns out a long list. With my optimism, it is only 6 hours of work left ( yeah right) ;)

What's left- run to the paint store (again) get more hardener, paint a few replacement parts and what I missed, mount the front doors, closing hardware and the new door pins, adjust back door latches, fix the gas tank breather (must be clogged with herculiner) might as well run all new gas line ;), new bypass heater hose (will get a new heater/blower unit an mount it later in the year, detail front springs and axle area, wire up interior lights, mount the running boards, install new gas filler neck for rear tank, air up the tires, check the fluids, tune and adjust the engine.... and take it for a spin before handing it off to Kristina for her DD
ah yeah sounds like all day

I will post final photos, and a few details on the obstacles we faced

Friday night- we made it !

Well... here we are Friday night my last day to get things done. We did get to most of the items on the list above. With all the thread chasing, door adjustments, and clean up. We used all the hours in the day to get the cruiser road ready...

After taking the cruiser on a maiden voyage-beer run at 2:30 this afternoon, it was running rough, very rough! Once we returned with our cold brews, I lifted the hood and discovered the PVC line was off the engine and the carb was sucking too much air. ( I run a weber 38, and have the PVC line into the underside of the air-cleaner) I re-connected the hose clean and re-gapped and cleaned the plugs, now the cruiser really purrs!

Did not get to do a final spray coat of paint, monsoons were coming in and we had no time left to do a proper job. ( will get it next month) The doors were tough to get back on with new nylon washers and all the new paint, we managed to clean up the hinges a bit, to get the doors in place and adjust things at least for now. With all the new rubber moldings and gaskets on the tub things are fitting very snug!

On our next voyage out for chinese food for dinner we found the cruiser had no rattles, or any loose body parts. A tight fit for sure!

-----------------------
Regrets-
Would have liked to have more time to sand between coats, have a proper spray booth ( even something makeshift) and get more of an even coat of paint on all the parts.

note to self:
[We will go over the outside and assess what needs correction. Without the whole project looming over us, and because of using a single stage paint process, get into a finer detail on the final paint coat]

Would have liked to remove the glass instead of masking- as good a job as we did on masking, some places need touch up.

Purchase all new lights for the side markers and tail lights ( we did at least get new front turn signals

Had more time to finish the interior dash, and center tuffy box, and aux. tank filler neck install
-----------------------------

All in all, a great job!!. We are really happy with the out come. And that we accomplished so much in so little time. To have a nearly new cruiser, with all the effort we put in, just looking outside at it makes us feel pride in ownership.

Total days 12- total hours ( too many), beer count was high

A BIG thank you to LandcruiserPhil, for coming up and injecting energy and offering up great stories, Kristina for her dedication, hard work, and love of the land-cruiser, Carlos at JPS paints for all the killer painting tips, and to all the great people on this site who had a look at our project and encouraged us along the way.

This is just the beginning, many new mods and repairs to be done - To be continued...
