deser/fj40:

It was me who posted about the colors. You can get Olive Brown mixed but you have to look up the code on auto color library. As I said beofre, many many people think that olive green is olive brown and vice versa. My 40 was sold to me as Olive Brown but the tag reads 653 i.e. olive green. Here is the interesting part, some parts of my 40 faded to a brown and some parts did not. Here is a pic prior to finishing.

By prior to finishing, I mean prior to putting all of the NEW resto parts back on. This is not the color that came to me.

Interesting about the fading... So that pick was the Olive Brown. Ya never really know what it will look like until you spray it:)

Here is what happened today from 6-noon AZ time

wet sanding with 1000 grit this afternoon, then paint the color coat early tomorrow. Getting close now :)

Thanks Phil!

just ordered a bunch of replacement parts from CC and Sor, mostly rubber stuff and little things to make the re-assembly nicer. I also ordered stainless steel bolts to replace all the bolts and screws with new alan head stainless bolts. I look forward to that part of the process...

OK time for a cold brew and get to sanding

Did you use por15 as a base coat before priming?

I am in the middle of stripping an fj40 and I am still deciding what to use as the base coat.
I am at bare metal now and treating with Picklex as a rust inhibitor

I only used POR15 for the inside tub. Since I had only a small amount of bare metal I used a 2 part primer that went along with the color product I bought. The best you can do is get all your products first so they all match, and read carefully the data sheets for each product...For bare metal you will need to use an etching primer.

OK back to spraying the color!

Ran out of paint...bummer

Used almost a full gallon w/reducer and 1 full quart of hardner. Ran out of Hardener and everything is closed until Monday am. :(

Plan B- since everything has 3 coats and just needs one more, I will start assembling things together, buff out a few items and spray the final coat on Monday with the cruiser semi together.

OK it is beer 30 !

Phil you a funny dude

Yeah, I eat paint fumes for breakfast :D ...and a very nice jesture on the help

The top is going back together and on the LC with all new rubber seals, Kristina is using it as a dd so it needs to be water tight for the coming monsoons. Eventually softtop/halfdoors.

Todays plan is to evaluate what just happened the last week  wet sand a few overs/errors, assemble a few body parts so I can see the over all look--- oh yeah and rest with the BBQ going, and a couple cold ones

My plan for Monday is head back to JPS paint store in Cottonwood for more paint and hardener, get back and get the final coat on ( maybe even a coat of clear) then watch it dry  If that sound like fun, company is always welcome! :bounce:

Hit builderdude for my cell#:

Herculiner in the tub

a couple photos of the herculiner, smells bad, no fun to really apply. But it looks good, did three coats with one gallon. Now on to the Rim for a BBQ and brew

LandcruiserPhil to the rescue!

One of the coolest things about this community is the real true desire to help one another. I just recently met LandcruiserPhil after a Sedona AZ run in May. Phil drove almost 2 hours north to offer his help, how could I refuse?

Phil arrived a 9-am after 15 minutes of chat he got right into the program, cleaning, detailing, and broken bolt removal ( with limited tools) Phil is one of those dudes that knows what's up and does not need to be hand held ;)

With Phil's help I was able to spray two final coats of paint on all the parts, while he readied the cruiser frame, seat rails, and running boards. After a fun ride in his 80 to a local lunch-spot, and a quick lesson on his GPS, we started right in on the assembly.

By now the sun was high, and the body parts were blazing hot! We rolled the cruiser in the garage with the parts and started to assemble things. Using all stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers, things were going back together easily ( trying hard to remember the sequence)

Today I will focus under the hood bolting parts back on the fenders and firewall. Then inside the dash, and the seats. I have until Friday to get this cruiser back on the road for my GF as her DD.... A BIG thank you to Phil! Things are looking up:cheers:

Looks killer, I'm so jealous and so need to do the same thing. Aren't you afraid of the bezel police or don't they bother anyone in rural Arizona?

Tuesday's progress

Worked on all the small stuff, firewall parts cleaning all the little rubber parts, thread chasing holes, and otherwise enjoying rebuilding this cruiser with new painted parts ...What a feeling ;)

Herculined the running boards ( thanks Phil!) loaded the gas tank in and installed most of the dash parts.

Getting closer and closer, tomorrow Kristina will help all day and we should have most of the doors and seats in place, as well as the new Bushwhacker fender flares on.
