Sorry if this is considered a double post, but I wasnt getting much help on my other post.
Short story, 2001 lx470 115k miles, transmission is shot. Its going to cost me about $4300 to either have shop rebuild or have a reman installed. Rebuild has a better warranty and then I dont have pay the shop to take it out again if problems.

I can save maybe $800-1000 to if I just bought the transmission, and towed the lx home and did it myself. I am not a mechanic, I do my own maintenance, fix the random things that break on my bj60 and when I had a fj40, but the most challenging thing I have done is a home brew turbo install on my BJ. But nothing like a transmission.
I have a big floor jack, basic tools, and a garage, nothing else special though.
I also have not a lot of time, 4 kids, and work.

Advice would be much appreciated. Any money saved would be great at this point.
But I dont want to screw it up.

See attached link for the full story.

It is fully do-able.

I'd rather put a trans in than do a lot of other work.

It's hard working on your back and reaching connections and the trans and transfer case are heavy no doubt. I'd count on 10 hours. Maybe more if your tool collection is lacking all the neat items to help with reach ability.

As Slickspawn says, you can do it. My only concern would be, its heavy and if you can rent/buy a transmission jack to remove and install, its very do able.

I check Amazon for transmission jacks, they run from $200- $400.

Good Luck and let us know the outcome.

Where are you planning on buying the reman? I saw prices online for under 2k but shipping is unknown.

Another option is to try to find a Toyota mechanic that would do it on the side.

Find a existing or former Toyota master mechanic with experience if you don't want to do it yourself.

While I'm one to always encourage DIY'ing, with 4 kids, work, limited tools, and no time (biggest factor) I would have it done at a reputable indie that works on LC's (if possible) or the local dealer (insist on the gray haired tech). Yes, it will be costly, but you will be able to sleep at night knowing your wife and kids are safe and you didn't have to bust your knuckles, teach your kids new words in the english language, and tweak your back while on your cold garage floor only to question if you did everything right.

Or find another shop...not sure how much $$$ you are in for diagnostics thus far, and not sure if that would be the going rate for your area or not, but I had mine fully rebuilt...all new hard parts including replacing the chewed up planetary gearset...for just north of $2K...including all labor.

Thanks so much for all the help, I have gone back on forth on this, one of the deciding factors(other than ones above, time, tools, etc) was realizing I probably couldnt get it in my garage. We have a very short and very steep driveway to get into our garage and I dont see how a tow truck could get up it and then be able to unload it into the garage, and I am not going to do it in the street! I dont know of any local toyota guys, and really need our car back as we cant all fit in the loaner car, or my Bj.

So the shop is doing it, they have good ratings, are a transmission speciality shop, not just a mechanic. And I am too pot committed to take it anywhere else now with the labor and diagnostics they have already done.
Codertimt, I have no idea how you got such a good deal, parts alone is around $1700, and I even price checked the list they gave me, then another $1900 for labor, then with what they had already done, plus tax Im looking at $4300 out the door. Ouch. I am not happy about the whole deal, and wish I had called around more before I gave it to them, and wished I had pulled the pan myself first. I dont think I would have saved much as around 4k is the price I have gotten from other places in the area as well.

One possible helpful thing in all my searching and calling places that I found out about the A343f that a shop that does custom trans and is with the nationwide trans reman company http://www.certifiedtransmission.com/
He said they will have a machinest make a deeper pocket in the overdrive planet and put a larger bearing on it, as that is where they have seen failures in theses transmissions, he said they see this on the landcruiser and the sequoias and that is what they started doing. Unfortunately like I said I have to much into this other shop to have it towed, but the owner at my shop is going to ask his head trans guy if they do that already or what he knows.
I doubt that any of us who own 2000-01s are going to start doing this if our transmission is working fine, but interesting either way.

Thanks again everyone, sorry for the long post, I plan to post up some pics of the failed parts.

:Hhmm: is anyone running the manual lock up feature?

Looks interesting, but I can see myself getting completely distracted by obstacles and forgetting that I have it locked and stall out the engine when braking. Or damage something.
